Qualifying is done for Henley and the Friday, which seems nearly universally deemed the most brutal day in the sport, whittled nearly 400 crews down to just 88, thus completing the field that will be drawn on Saturday into the regatta proper.
Of the twenty US crews put on the clock this year, 12 (up from the previously reported 11 after the women's double of Meena Baher & Hailey Mead were added on Saturday evening after the Australian double had to drop out) made it through, to include the SRAA-winning Winter Park Junior Women's Eight and both of the colleges that have been showing good speed in the Quad on the Thames the past two weeks: Brown and Cal. The "spares" of the biggest college programs had a great day as well, with Cal and Yale Women qualifying Pairs, and Washington qualifying a Men's Double and Tabea Schendekehl in the Women's Single.
The day was not without its heartbreak for Americans hoping to move on, though: both the Redwood Sculler's U23 double and the Brown Women's Four rowed the best time NOT to qualify, just missing the cut (at least, until the double was moved on, as described above).
Tradition dictates that the times of the qualifiers themselves are not made public--as a way to preserve the integrity of the draw by keeping the speed of individual entries a mystery--so there is no way to know (for us at least) just how close it was for those two crews looking to mix it up in the Elite 2x and 4- events next week.
The draw will take place on Saturday, as per normal, but will be closed to the public, as per what we might call COVID-normal: just 20 select coaches have invited to be on hand to witness the proceedings this year.
Once we have the draw, we will be back with a perhaps "way to early" look at how next week will play out--until then, here is your list of all the US-based crews that to qualify today. Well rowed, and tremendous luck the rest of the way.
