Henley Royal Regatta is headed into its third day, and the level of competition is mounting aggressively per many of the matchups listed below. You can see it all live from the banks and from the sky thanks to heaps of cameras on land, boats, and drones over the length of the course. Here is a rundown of Day Three/Friday highlights - all times are local.
Remember, Henley-on-Thames is five hours ahead of EDT in the US.
More info:
9:30am, Thames Challenge Cup: Montclair Mounties vs Cork Boat Club, Ireland
The Montclair schoolboys meet the selected crew in their section of the draw, as the Irish from Cork come calling. A powerful unit with strong pedigree, Cork will provide stiff competition for Montclair, who dispatched London Rowing Club on Thursday by 1 and ¾ lengths.
10am, Temple Challenge Cup: University of Washington vs A.S.R. Nereus
Friday usually throws up the first genuinely tantalising encounters at Henley Royal Regatta, and this clash in the Temple Challenge Cup allies to that theme. Washington – better known as the Huskies in the USA – have looked imperious in beating Oxford Brookes and Orange Coast so far, whilst Nereus upset their selected Dutch rivals Proteus-Eretes before claiming victory over Nottingham University.
10:05am, Stonor Challenge Trophy – K.Grube & K.Walter vs R.Morgan & B.Lawrence
Our first taste of action in the newly-named Stonor Challenge Trophy and it’s the UK up against the USA. With minimal genuine international pedigree present in this event, this is a great chance for development crews to stake a claim for Henley silverware.
10:10am, Prince Albert - Columbia University USA vs. National University Ireland
One of the strongest lightweight programs in the USA, Columbia take on the National University of Ireland, Galway in a race that will determine semi-final placings. Having already been knocked out of the Visitors Challenge Cup, Columbia will be keen to take a Irish scalp.
10:30am, Remenham: Princeton Training Center vs. University of Washington
The current US U23 boat lines up against Washington's top crew that placed second at NCAA's, and which Washington crew includes at least three crew members that will return to the US after Henley to vie for seats in… the US U23 eight. It should be a great race – not to mention perhaps someone's seat race.
10:50am, Diamond Challenge Sculls: Charles Cousins vs Jamie Kirkwood
Two former GB internationals go head to head. Jamie Kirkwood, who has taken up a coaching position at the University of Oxford, is a former lightweight whilst Charles raced at the 2012 Olympic Games in the heavyweight quad. He’s making a comeback and is undefeated on the domestic circuit this year.
11:35am, Remenham Challenge Cup: University of Iowa vs National Training Centre Australia
The Australian National outfit will look to use this Regatta as a stepping stone on their road to the World Championships and will want to make light work of the University of Iowa, who placed 11th at the NCAA’s.
12pm, Double Sculls Challenge Cup: S.N.B Cox & T.Oliver vs. P. O’Donovan & G. O’Donovan
When Stephen Cox and Tiernan Oliver line up to race on the Henley track tomorrow, they’ll know they’ve got one hell of a mountain to climb. Their opponents, the charismatic O’Donovan brothers, are one of the world’s leading lightweight doubles, having won an Olympic silver medal in 2016. This is their first foray at Henley Royal Regatta and there’ll be keen to impress the home crowd.
12:10pm, Temple Challenge Cup: Yale University vs Princeton University
Two institutions who know each other very well, this is an American crew classic transposed onto the blue waters of the Thames. Yale have brought a selection of 1V, 2V and 3V athletes and, having defeated Bath University on the Thursday, will face a lightweight boat from Princeton, who saw off the University of London.
12:30pm, Diamond Jubilee Challenge Cup: Y Quad Cities RA vs Henley Rowing Club
Occasionally, the quirks of the Henley Royal Regatta draw allow us to witness a race earlier in the schedule then perhaps the two crews involved warrant. Y Quad Cities and Henley is one such example, where both boats are arguably deserving of a place in the final. Henley are national champions in both the eight and the quad whilst Y Quads Cities have a junior world champion on-board. Expect fireworks approaching the enclosures.
2pm, Remenham Challenge Cup: Yale University vs A.S.R. Nereus
For the first time in the club’s history, A.S.R. Nereus have a boat entered in the Remenham Challenge Cup. Yale University will look to continue their winning start to Henley Royal Regatta, following a solid victory over Oxford Brookes on Wednesday.
2:20pm, Fawley Challenge Cup – The Windsor Boys School vs Westminster School
Second and third at the National Schools’ Regatta, these two schoolboy heavyweights clash on the Friday for a place in the semi-finals of the world’s premier junior sculling competition. Windsor, with their recent improvements evidenced in a comfortable dispatching of York City, will fancy their chances as the holders – Westminster have stacked their quad this year but may find the going a little tough.
2:50pm, Diamond Challenge Sculls: Tom Graves vs Nuno Mendes
Tom Graves is a Henley regular, having made finals in the Queen Mother and the Double Sculls. Tom, a selected sculler in 2018, will meet Nuno Mendes of Portugal in his first round.
3pm, Princess Grace Challenge Cup: Sydney University & Edinburgh University vs University of Washington
The Husky crew is made up of athletes who raced in the Second Varsity crew, winning gold at the NCAA, and one member of the silver medal winning Varsity Four. They race international opposition in the form of a Sydney University/Edinburgh University composite a crew which contains the winner of Academic Lightweight and Championship Singles at Henley Women’s Regatta.
3:45pm, Town Challenge Cup: Leander Club & Bath University vs Yale University
This Great Britain squad boat will look to build on their World Rowing Cup results so far this season by kickstarting their Henley campaign with a win against Yale University. The multi-national crew from Connecticut contains Yale’s captain for next season along with home flair, in the form of two former pupils from Headington School, Oxford
3:50pm, Diamond Challenge Sculls: P.M. Tufte vs A.M.O Drysdale
The return of the double Olympic gold medallist to Henley waters is always well received by the expectant Henley crowds. Drysdale, who is locked in an internal selection battle with fellow Kiwi Robbie Manson, has travelled to the UK to try and equal Stuart MacKenzie’s record of six Diamond Scull titles.
5:30pm, Temple Challenge Cup : Brown University vs Newcastle University
A proper heavyweight match-up, between two of the finest student rowing programs in the world. Brown defeated a schoolboy crew from Eton, who collided with the booms early on in their race, whilst Newcastle put away University College London.
5:50pm, Silver Goblets and Nickalls Challenge Cup: J.R.N Palmer & N.M Pusinelli vs M. Sinkovic & V. Sinkovic
Globally recognised and feared, the Sinkovic brothers return to Henley Royal Regatta for the first time since 2011. Having won an Olympic gold medal in the heavyweight double in Rio, they’ve trade two oars for one and are now having a crack at the Silver Goblets and Nickalls Challenge Cup. If conditions remain as flat and as warm as they have been, the Croatians could well be eyeing Redgrave and Pinsent’s record.
6:20pm, Town Challenge Cup: University of London vs Princeton Training Centre
The winners of Championship Coxless Fours at BUCS Regatta, University of London will face stiff competition from their American opposition. The provisional USA U23 boat entered as Princeton Training Centre will hope to progress far through this regatta in order to gain valuable racing experience before the World Championships.
6:40pm, Temple Challenge Cup: Oxford Brookes ‘A’ vs Syracuse University
After a confident opening couple of rounds from Syracuse, they face their toughest test yet in the form of holders and favourites Oxford Brookes. The student rowing powerhouse have won this event three times in the past four years and will be looking to add more silverware to their substantial cabinet.
6:50pm, Silver Goblets & Nickalls Challenge Cup: R.Hurn & S.Carnegie vs. A.A. Juhasz & B.Simon, Hungary
Born in the UK but bred on the East Coast of the USA, Rob Hurn and Sholto Carnegie were team-mates as Yale won the IRA National Championships in 2017. They’ve teamed up for a crack at the Silver Goblets – and will be making their senior debuts at the Lucerne World Cup – but must first negotiate the Hungarian national pair. There are no easy races at Henley.
