There were several interesting things that happened on Friday at Henley, but the one that happened directly in front of row2k is the probably the most interesting for this space. On the way down to the start line for Washington's Ladies' Plate race, a swan and it's five cygnets made their way in between the booms and the 'Swan & Goose Patrol' boat had to take some mildly aggresive action to get the swan and family out of harm's way for the upcoming race.
A miscommunication between the officials and the animal handlers lead to the race starting before the situation could be contained so only the two grown swans were taken on board the boat. One of the quad came very close to the babies but they managed to avoid getting struck and when the last one popped out from underneath the water there were cheers from the patrons on shore. About an hour later row2k learned that the entire family had been safely moved to safer part of the river. The entire sequence can be viewed here, and it should be strongly noted that Swan & Goose Patrol are professional animanl handlers.
Another interesting note if you saw the photos of the UVa guys in their water craft from Thursday, John Bancheri, head coach for Grand Valley State was patrolling around the Thames in the same boat today. row2k needs to find out where that thing gets parked for the finals!
We posted three galleries from Friday which is typically the highest volume day for row2k content so it's downhill from here. Much more to come on Saturday!
