With just one day to go Henley is buzzing, as the finishing touches are put to the facilities and lots of crews arrive and fine tune their race tactics during their few last practice outings on the course -- though, one unfortunate Japanese sculler was spotted getting a lift back to the boat area, along with his sculling boat in the back of an Environment Agency launch earlier today – accompanied by a broken oar.
He will be racing, but Marcel Hacker will not; Hacker has withdrawn from the Diamond Sculls due to an injury and the committee have decided to offer his place to T.M. Paulett of Princeton University, as the fastest non-qualifier in last Friday's qualifying races.
Although the serious business doesn’t start until tomorrow morning at 9am, the first official races of the regatta already have been and gone, with the spare pairs event (Goldie A beat Grand Valley State in the final by three lengths).
Wednesday’s timetable promises a full day of racing, starting at 9am and running through 7.20pm in five minute intervals. The races on the first day of the regatta are limited to the club, student and school events, where the bulk of the entries are.
The University of Washington are the first US crew to take to the water tomorrow, racing against University of Warwick at 9:35am in the Temple while Princeton University meet Imperial College in the Prince Albert at 9:50am.
