New Year's Resolutions Died Last Week; Keep Training
February 9, 2016
Ed Hewitt,

The Rio McDonald's, the first McDonald's in South America

Most rowers don't need New Year's resolutions – the stark reality of the erg split or the seat race or the head race result trumps any goal set on an arbitrary midwinter day with very few daylight hours – and a rower's normal day is like most folks' "stretch goal" anyway.

But if your weekend erg session was particularly hard, you missed some erg split goals, or you didn't do the extra lift you were planning, you can take solace in the fact that most of the country abandoned even their most modest goals last week.

According to data collected by the check-in app Swarm and Foursquare , February 4th is the day when "the uptick in check-ins at fast food joints meets the downturn in visits to the gym."

Even if you have fallen off the New Year's wagon yourself, the data is pretty amusing; in fact, this Friday, February 12, is termed "Fatty Solstice," as it will likely be the peak day for fast food visits in Q1 2016.

So keep training – because you don't need no stinking New Year's Resolution.
