Ultimate Erg Playlist - Volume II
January 15, 2013
Erik Dresser, row2k.com

row2k's back with Volume II of our ultimate erg playlist just in time to get you that extra speed for CRASH-B's. Be sure to check out Volume I from December!

Once again, a couple notes on how songs were selected as this is obviously a highly subjective list:

  • Song should be instantly recognizable as a great erg song
  • Only one song per artist (including Volume I) as there many artists which qualified multiple songs (Eminem, Rage Against the Machine, etc.)
  • We tried to bring you songs from a variety of eras and genres of music for all types of erg pieces

Songs listed alphabetically by artist. Link to Spotify playlist here.

    Also, voting results here.

    Beastie Boys - Sabotage
"There has to be a Beastie Boys song on the playlist and Sabotage is my favorite for working out to."
    -Tyler

    Black Sabbath - Iron Man
"Iron Man by Black Sabbath is the perfect song to come on in the second half of a 10k test. I AM IRON MAN!"
    -Edward

Bon Jovi - Livin' On A Prayer
"Easily the most epic song from the 80's and perhaps all-time. It's great to erg since any rower knows that you're living on a prayer in the last 500!"
    -Rob

    Darude - Sandstorm
"Sandstorm is the ultimate erg tune. It keeps your stroke rate even and pushes you for a power 10 every few."
    -Barbara

Deadmau5 - There Might Be Coffee
"This song takes you on a journey across the waves of pain that roll through your body."
    -Mike

Fort Minor - Remember The Name
"This is 10% luck, 20% skill, 15% concentrated power of will, 5% pleasure, 50% pain and 100% reason to remember the name! Enough said, really... but I will also say: The beat drives through the whole song. Great for any point, but especially the beginning of a 2k to get pumped or that 2/3 done time of any workout when you need to reach for that boost."
    -Jay

House Of Pain - Jump Around
"Awesome track, and everyone on my team LOVES when this song comes on!"
    -Kristin

    Kanye West - Stronger
"I first heard this at about the 45-minute mark of an Hour of Power during spring break. Our captain had plugged his iPod into the boathouse speakers, and most of the mix had been alternative rock, and when this came on, I got so pumped up that my split dropped 2 seconds for the whole song. After the piece, everyone said the same thing--that was there favorite song from the playlist, and they all cranked extra hard when the song came on. Perfect for focusing on power (and feeling like a badass) at mid stroke rates, 24-26."
    -Ryan

    Katy Perry - Firework
"Inspiring lyrics and music for any type of erg piece!"
    -Zoe

Macklemore & Ryan Lewis - Thrift Shop
"Hands down the best jam of the season. Every time it comes on our splits drop by 5 numbers for a second and you just see everyones heads bobbing along mid stroke. When he goes 'this is f***ing awesome' you can't help but sing it whether you're doing abs or a 6k test. Just a blast."
    -Cameron

Nelly - Heart Of A Champion
"For 2k season it has to be Heart of a Champion by Nelly. Amazing pump up song!"
    -Tony

    P.O.D. - Boom
"Boom is a great rock song to erg to, plus it has to be the only music video every that involves a competitive table tennis brawl. Epic!"
    -Ian

Phil Collins - In The Air Tonight
"It's the only song I listen to before any erg test or race. It's helps me focus my race fury. And it's also good during a steady state piece."
    -John W.

Rolling Stones - Start Me Up
"Great song for on the erg. Obviously for the start of a piece, but also at the end when the erg is making 'grown men cry'!"
    -Joe

U2 - Where The Streets Have No Name
"Where The Streets Have No Name is a truly exhilarating and inspirational piece of music and should be on anyone's erg playlist!"
    -Nikolas

If you're in north America , check out the late night radio program on Sunday nights "The Ongoing History of Rock and Roll" on FM. radio , either CHFI 98.1, or 102.1 "The Edge" (also on FM radio.) Offers a great catalogue of the old stuff, as well as what's out there now.
