Ready to Recap? Here's what went down last week.
Duct Tape to the Max
They say there's never been a known failure, but we're not sure how hydrodynamic a duct tape job like the one above could be.
Turns out this shell wasn't at SIRAs to get raced, just there to get dropped off for a repeat bow fix--we hear the flames are from it's first "nose job."
You can bet we'll be keeping an eye out for that boat's tape-free return in a future Recap.
How Serious?
Take a close look for the answer:
Pretty good as a boat name, even better as a racing mantra. Well played, Tar Heels.
Return of the Free Speed Mullet?
We know from this classic Video of the Day that mullets are basically free speed for Australians...
But we couldn’t help thinking this hair cut on Harvard's Lachlan Roach looked familiar, because it made us think immediately of:
So, is Chad Powers now rowing for Harvard?
Nope, but when we checked the roster to be sure, we realized this wasn’t the first row2k photo for Lachlan's family: his mom made a row2k gallery back in 2001, when she won a gold for AUS in the light women’s quad.
Unfortunately, his dad's international career for Australia wrapped up just before row2k arrived on the scene, or maybe we'd have a full set.
The Vibes When...
You have a boatful of teammates one lane over in your semi.
All About the Threeve
Lotta love for the 3V life from this bow pair:
And these two had a whole routine for us, shushes and all, before the start of this race.
Basin Was A Beast, Again
Even for a spring full of "boy, it's windy in Boston" galleries, this past Sunday out did itself:
We clocked the headwind at 20 mph with 32 mph gusts, and the MIT coaches called it "a fitting weekend for biblical conditions" on the results page, it being Easter and all.
As it turns out, there's a pretty good reason we've, umm, enjoyed all that bluster on the Basin this year:
Rogue Yoga Mat
Yoga mats for the stakeboaters to lie on are a pretty good start line upgrade, but this one got away at Mercer.
Looks like they could've used this clever bungee hack we spotted at the Cooper last week.
Expanding our Sign-cabulary
Moving on from Wisco dubs and Mercer M's, this weekend we got Louisville L's:
And claws out from these Clemson Tigers:
Camera Spotters of the Week
This Cornell five man definitely clocked us...
And so did the Midshipman leading this Saturday morning training run during the racing:
Who Did it Better?
When going for the mid-stroke, wave-to-row2k move, is it better to go inside arm only?
Or outside arm only?
Probably depends on which drills you do back home, eh?
Peak Stakeboating
It's not always thrilling for sure:
Cue the Jaws Music?
Does this photo seem a bit menacing to anyone else?
Maybe it's the shark fin, or maybe it's what this boat's name means in Hungarian--basically "I'll kill you"--but we were worried it might want to take a bite out of the Cookie there.
Bit Less Menacing
Turns out there's plenty of time for a good two-handed Gator Chomp while three seat sculls with your oar.
