Four years ago, Arshay Cooper called on rowers to participate in a "Day On" day of service to honor Martin Luther King Jr. Day; this year several programs participated both at home and while on training trips. You can scroll through the photos above to see them at work; the photos are in alphabetical order by team (save for Cooper's visit with San Miguel, which posts first).
"This was the 4th year of service for us and my call to action to the athletes is to find a community organization with deep community roots and learn about their work and collaborate and serve alongside them continuously," said Cooper, who is co-founder of the A Most Beautiful Thing Inclusion Fund (AMBTIF).
"We all know that King Day is considered a day of service," Cooper continued. "But Coretta Scott King said that 'King Day is not a day off but a day on.' Service, and service on this day, have always been a part of my life and job. Growing up watching professional basketball and football, the thing that struck me most was the commercial break with NBA Cares and NFL Cares foundations. It definitely changed some of my thoughts on professional athletes after watching their service to others. With that, I am working on 'Day On' to show that Rowing Cares."
San Miguel Academy
For Cooper's part, he and US Olympian Molly Reckford visited San Miguel Academy, which is an AMBTIF Partner Program.
"I had the opportunity to attend San Miguel with Molly Reckford, where we spoke and also encouraged kids who did some erging. The money raised by meters will benefit families affected by the California fire, while the other programs and teams focused on different service activities."
Brown
"The athletes went to a Youth Shelter in Cocoa Florida and helped paint the interior walls and helped with projects on the grounds. They spent 2 hours on the site."
BU
"We have a plan to organize a toiletry and clothing drive for a local Boston organization that we will be partnering with throughout the semester. "
Cal
"We worked with Urban Tilth on the Richmond Greenway Trail doing things such as trash pick up, gardening, and mural painting. I believe we also brought ergs with us to teach community members a little about erging/rowing (all about the exposure). It is worth noting though that since we started working here four-ish years ago the Greenway has become way more established and clean and is now just such a nice place for people to get outside. The men’s team joined us as well this year (along with many other Ccal athletic teams)."
Delaware
"They did blanket making for a children’s hospital, sorted donated clothing, and worked at two soup kitchens."
Ithaca
"We were helping sort donated clothes and shoes for a local non-profit organization. They strive to Enhance Community, Economy and the Environment."
Princeton
"This year our entire boathouse worked together to spread out along 2 miles of the Tampa River Walk and clean up trash along the waterfront and in the parks. It was 200 of us in all and we did the project for the City of Tampa Parks and Rec."
