1973 Girls, Kent's First Girls Crew: An Excerpt from 'More Than Rowing, Kent School Boat Club, The First 100 Years'
June 1, 2021
Peter Mallory

In a projected two volumes, More Than Rowing covers 100 Kent boys crews between 1922 and 2021 and 47 girls crews stretching from 1973 to 2021. Each year was populated with young athletes living, learning, and growing, and their stories are worth remembering and preserving.

This week I present the section on the Fall 1973 Girls. After Kent Boys had been competing for more than half a century, this was the very first Kent Girls Crew.

I would like to note that while the girls may have felt a bit of resistance from some of the boys, I can say with confidence that the boys in the Boat Club were supportive. I rowed in the first boat that spring, and my room mate was the team captain. I know we were glad to see the girls get a shot at rowing then and I don't know anyone that did isn't glad to wee the success the girls have had.
