1965 Boys First Boat: An Excerpt from 'More Than Rowing, Kent School Boat Club, The First 100 Years'
April 28, 2021
Peter Mallory

In a projected two volumes, More Than Rowing covers 100 Kent boys crews between 1922 and 2021 and 47 girls crews stretching from 1973 to 2021. Each year was populated with young athletes living, learning, and growing, and their stories are worth remembering.

It is hard for me to select out particular years for you to preview. After three years of work, each feels like one of my children, and it is hard to treat one above another. This week I present the 1963 Boys and 1965 Boys (below) sections from the era of the Vietnam War.

If Scoggins went on to row for Harvard after Kent he was a real character. He grew his hair long and when the HV1 crew traveled to Navy he wore a cape into their dining hall. The VN War protests were in full swing and it was NOT popular.
