With an ongoing pandemic, the only way many teams can get on the water at this moment is in a single. While some detest small boats others find freedom in going out on their own. Whether you are in a single by choice or necessity, this week for Wayback Wednesday we are highlighting those who ventured out in a single over the last 100+ years.

First up we have a photo courtesy of Hear the Boat Sing. Frenchy A. Johnson, the single scull featured in the first photo above, was the first prominent African-American oarsman of modern times. To read more about him, check out their article Rowing & People of Colour.

The rest of our collection this week comes courtesy of the Thames Rowing Club Archives. We highlighted some of their images from around Europe a few weeks ago.

It has been a while since we featured Wayback Photos from our readers. If you have any images you would like to share with the rowing community, please send them our way!
