When the 1984 Games were held in Los Angeles, it had been 8 years since the US last participated in the Olympics. The 1980 Moscow Olympics was boycotted by the US and 66 other countries in protest of the Soviet Afghan war. row2k photographer Mike Modlin was in the stands 36 years ago, and recently sat down to scan in and share several of his photos.

Mike and his family were in the grandstands for the 84 Games on Lake Casitas. The day was hazy and he was shooting with a Pentax SLR and a Vivitar zoom. The US won 8 rowing medals during the games. The 1984 games also saw Steve Redgrave pick up his first gold medal in the coxed 4.

This is just a sampling of the photos Mike scanned in - the full gallery can be found here.
