It’s Wayback Wednesday! Normally today would have been the start of the Henley Royal Regatta. For those who are relatively new to rowing, the Henley Regatta was first held in 1839 and the traditional length of the course is 1 mile 550 yards or 2,112 meters. You can always go back and check out our past Henley coverage or past galleries here. While Wayback Wednesday is typically a once a week feature, this week for the next 5 days, we are going to share with you classic Henley photo from a time before row2k made their way to the Thames; photos provided by HRR.

** Photo #4 American rower John B. Kelly, Jr (1927 - 1985) is assisted by his father, John B. Kelly Sr, (1889 - 1960, right) and a coach, after finishing second to Eduardo Risso of Uraguay in the semi-finals of the Men's Single Sculls at Henley-on-Thames during the London Olympic Games, 7th August 1948. Kelly, Jr is the brother of actress Grace Kelly.**

That looks like Dick Erickson across the bow of the launch helping pull the stricken stroke out of the river. Erickson, head coach at the University of Washington (Seattle) had two crews win at Henley '77. One was the other crew in this opening heat of the Visitor's Challenge Cup. The UW eight won the Grand Challenge Cup that year as well. Next to Dick appears to be Frank Coyle, then an assistant coach at Washington, who went on to become the Executive Director of USRowing in the 1990's.
