PRINCETON, N.J. - Rowers with 2007 National Team aspirations hit the water on Saturday at Carnegie Lake for the 2006 USRowing November Small Boats Regatta. The regatta, which included racing in seven boat categories, was the final opportunity for athletes to test their speed going into the winter training season.
In the men's single sculls, New York Athletic Club's Gabe Winkler (St. Johnsbury, Vt.) clocked the fastest time by more than 26 seconds. The four-time senior national team member covered the course in a time of 25:53.83. Potomac Boat Club's Jamie Schroeder (Wilmette, Ill.), who represented the U.S. in the men's single at the 2006 World Championships, finished second in a 26:19.89, followed by Princeton Training Center's Sam Stitt (McLean, Va.) in a 26:29.23.
Michelle Guerette (Bristol, Conn.) easily won the women's single sculls race. Guerette, the 2005 World Championships bronze medalist in the event, clocked a 28:50.49 to finish more than 17 seconds ahead of Potomac Boat Club's Brett Sickler (Los Gatos, Calif.). Princeton Training Center's Susan Francia (Abington, Pa.) finished third in a 29:10.81.
Princeton Training Center crews took the top nine spots in the men's pair. The duo of Matt Deakin (San Francisco, Calif.) and Matt Schnobrich (St. Paul, Minn.) defeated Beau Hoopman (Plymouth, Wis.) and Wyatt Allen (Portland, Maine) by more than five seconds to win the race. Deakin and Schnobrich clocked a 24:48.83, while Hoopman and Allen finished in a 24:54.48. PTC's Josh Inman (Hillsboro, Ore.) and Steven Coppola (Buffalo, N.Y.) finished third in a 24:55.39.
Princeton Training Center's Caroline Lind (Greensboro, N.C.) and Caryn Davies (Ithaca, N.Y.), who were members of the gold-medal winning women's eight at the 2006 World Championships, won the women's pair by a little more than three seconds. Lind and Davies crossed the finish line with a time of 26:45.77. PTC's Anna Goodale (Camden, Maine) and Megan Cooke (Los Gatos, Calif.) finished second in a 26:48.81, followed by the Pocock Rowing Center/PTC duo of Anna Mickelson (Bellevue, Wash.) and Lindsay Shoop (Charlottesville, Va.) in a 27:01.05.
The New York Athletic Club/Princeton Training Center duo of Simon Carcagno (Pennington, N.J.) and Tom Paradiso (Blue Bell, Pa.) won the lightweight men's pair race. Carcagno and Paradiso crossed the finish line with a time of 25:24.42 to finish more than nine seconds ahead of teammates Matt Muffelman (Mathews, Va.) and Pat Todd (Cincinnati, Ohio). Muffelman and Todd clocked a 25:33.68. The NYAC/PTC pair of Colin Farrell (Oaklyn, N.J.) and Matt Smith (Woodbridge, Va.) finished third in a 25:49.40.
Two-time Olympian Steve Tucker (Mooresville, Ind.) won the lightweight men's single sculls. Tucker covered the course in a 26:56.57, finishing less than five seconds ahead of New York Athletic Club's Andrew Bolton (Old Lyme, Conn.). Bolton finished with a time of 27:01.06. Penn AC's Evan Price (Butler, Pa.) finished third in a 27:11.66.
Princeton Training Center's Renee Hykel (Haverford, Pa.) defeated PTC teammate Julie Nichols (Livermore, Calif.), her partner in the lightweight double sculls, to win the lightweight single sculls race. Hykel finished with a time of 29:02.84, while Nichols clocked a 29:16.42. Riverside Boat Club's Marika Page (San Rafael, Calif.) finished third in a 29:48.99.
The seven-kilometer races served as a chance for rowers to gauge where they stand heading into winter training and was an opportunity to earn performance-based funding. The winning boats in each event earned $2,000 per seat, while the second-place finishers earned $1,000 per seat. In total, 191 boats and 220 athletes entered the regatta.
