About the Windermere Collegiate Crew Classic:
The Windermere Collegiate Crew Classic will feature collegiate crews from fifteen schools across the nation in Henley-style lightweight women's, open women's and men's rowing events. More than 80 individual races will take place between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Saturday, and from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 on Sunday (see schedule below for details). In addition to the collegiate events on the slate, local high school and junior rowing clubs will also compete. All race events are free and open to the public, who are welcome to view racing from the shoreline and surrounding areas.
Regatta Director and Stanford University Director of Rowing Craig Amerkhanian:
"The Windermere Collegiate Crew Classic will showcase some of the best men's and women's rowing in the country," said Craig Amerkhanian, Stanford director of rowing and men's head coach. "This event offers the rare opportunity to see competition between many of the nation's top East and West coast crew teams as well as some of the sport's most accomplished athletes. With the spectator friendly venue at Redwood Shores it's perfect opportunity to see the racing up close. It goes without saying that that this event would not be possible without the generous support of Windermere Real Estate."
About the Competitors:
The men's and women's collegiate fields for the Windermere Collegiate Crew Classic is arguably the best collection of national collegiate rowing teams in any single regatta outside of conference and national championship events. In the men's varsity event, all six competitors finished within the top 17 places including No. 3 California and No. 16 Princeton who figures to move into contention for the 2004 National Championship with the addition of its 2003 undefeated frosh eight to the varsity squad. On the women's side, the regatta boasts preseason No. 6 Stanford, No. 7 Virginia, No. 8 Michigan State, and No. 11 California. In the lightweight competition, 2003 No. 1 Princeton, No. 2 Harvard, No. 4 Georgetown and No. 5 Stanford will do battle.
What is Henley-Style Racing?
Henley-Style is a one-on-one or a two-boat race. Also referred to as a dual race, this format for competition is used at the Henley Royal Regatta in Henley-on-Thames, England.
About Rowing Leagues and Championships:
The Intercollegiate Rowing Association Regatta (IRA) is the oldest collegiate rowing championship in the country and remains the premier event for national rowing honors for collegiate men. The Cincinnati Regatta, raced on Harsha Lake, was recognized as the sport's heavyweight national championship from 1982 until 1996, but the winner of the Varsity Challenge Cup at IRA has since regained the recognition of national champion.
The first women's collegiate championship was held in Oak Ridge, Tennessee in 1980, but it was not until 1997 that women's rowing became an NCAA sport. Since then, the team title along with first varsity eights, second varsity eights and varsity fours titles have been contested at the NCAA Women's Rowing Championships.
Women's lightweight rowing is not an NCAA sport and its national championship is contested at the IRA.
Windermere Real Estate and Rowing:
Windermere's heritage of supporting collegiate crew racing began 18 years ago when the company sponsored the first annual Windermere Cup regatta in Seattle. Held in partnership with the University of Washington, the Windermere Cup has become one of the largest community events in Seattle, welcoming national and international crew teams for exciting competition while commencing the official opening day of boating season for the waters of the Puget Sound. In 2003, Windermere elected to expand it's involvement with the sport and launched, in conjunction with Stanford University, the Windermere Collegiate Crew Classic at Redwood Shores.
Men's Varsity Team Notes:
Stanford-M
Head Coach Craig Amerkhanian and the Stanford Cardinal return senior Matt Altman, juniors Eric Feeny, David Banks and Zach Cooper along with sophomore Jake Cornelius from last year's varsity eight. In 2003, the Cardinal finished fourth at the Pac-10 Championships and at No. 14 at the IRA National Championships. The Cardinal will be without powerhouse Jamie Schroeder who is currently away from the team in a bid to earn a spot on the U.S. Olympic squad.
California-M:
After dominating collegiate rowing for much of the last five seasons, including four IRA National Championships and a third place finish in 2003, Cal and Head Coach Steve Gladstone find themselves in uncharted waters this season. The Bears return only oarsman, Robert Austerman, from last year's varsity eight. For Cal it will be up to a combination of savvy reserves from last year's JV IRA National Champion and sophomores looking for redemption following a second-place finish behind Princeton frosh at the 2003 IRA.
Penn-M
Quakers Head Coach Stan Bergman, who enters his 20th season at the helm of Penn Crew, returns Andrew Kelly, Ryan Broderick and James Lederman from the 2003 varsity. Kelly, a senior, returns to the squad after taking Gold in the coxed pair at the 2003 World Championships in Milan, Italy last summer. Last season, Penn finished ranked at No. 17 in the nation.
Princeton-M:
Head Coach Curtis Jordan returns Tyson White, Jamie Faris, Brandon Paige, Jeff Baumgardner, Aaron Kroeker, Spencer Washburn and Tim Dittman from the 2003 varsity eight that finished 16th at the IRA National Championships last year. Look for the sophomore class to make a big impact in this years varsity lineup, however, as Princeton Frosh were untouchable last year finishing off a undefeated IRA National Championship season with a victory in the Temple Cup at Henley.
Navy-M
Head coach Rick Clothier and his Navy varsity eight made strides in 2003 finishing fourth at the Eastern Sprints and No. 8 at the IRA National Championships. The Midshipmen return a nucleus of Albert Arnold, Doug Brayton, Andrew Melander, Sean MacDougall, Paul Marcy, Tim Rigler from last year's varsity. "We hope to be a bit faster in 2004!" said Clothier.
Yale-M
Head Coach John Pescatore and the Yale Bulldogs return all of the varsity oarsmen from a 2003 crew that finished 11th at the Eastern Sprints and 15th at the IRA National Championships. Senior and Captain Andrew Brennan, won a Gold Medal at the Pan American Games last summer rowing in the U.S. Eight oared shell. Other returnees include Greg Sherman, Scott Bender, Chris Heller, Jeff Mascia, Tom Kalvik and Carl Dietz.
Women's Varsity Team Notes:
Stanford-W
Head Coach Aimee Baker and the No. 6 Stanford women's varsity eight return, Wendy Hoeveler, Missy Fiesler, Melissa Haury, Marlo Dreissigacker and Ashley Maloney from their 2003 campaign. Stanford is the defending Pac-10 Champion and was the bronze medalist in the varsity eight at the NCAA National Championships. Coxswain Hoeveler earned second team All-American and All-Pac-10 honors last season, while Fiesler and Haury were all conference selections.
California-W
The No. 11 ranked Golden Bears return 15 letterwinners with experience racing at NCAAs. Sixth year head coach Dave O'Neill has been impressed with the leadership this core has shown. The combination of experienced seniors and rapidly improving sophomores has provided O'Neill with any number of fast varsity combinations. "We have a solid group who know what it takes to win at this level," said O'Neill. "They have learned from past experiences and raised standards and expectations."
Cornell-W
Head Coach Melanie Onufrieff's squad is comprised of nine seniors, nine juniors, twelve sophomores, and 20 freshmen. There's a strong veteran, upperclass leadership with talented, exuberant youth to push them. In addition to Siobhan Steyn, Sarah Greer, Amelia Siani, Kelly Neuman, and coxswain Vicki Liang who return from the EAWRC seventh place varsity eight. In addition, seven of nine from last year's 2V that finished 4th at EAWRC Championships are back.
Michigan State-W
Head Coach Bebe Bryans and the No. 8 ranked Spartans will be bolstered by Michelle Fix, Stacey Hicks, Christen Brown, Katie Isaacs, who all return from the 2003 varsity. Last season Michigan State finished third in the Big-10 and 13th at the NCAA Championships. "We're really looking forward to returning to the Windermere Classic," said Bryans. "The racing will be fantastic and the Windermere and Stanford University people put on a great event."
Virginia-W
The No. 7 ranked Cavilers Head Coach Kevin Sauer returns Genevieve Cauchon-Voyer, Bethany Clark, Carolyn McMillan, Jennifer Reck, Lindsay Shoop and Betty Shumaker from the 2003 varsity eight that finished fifth at the NCAA National Championships. Since the inaugural NCAA National Championship in 1997, Virginia has finished the Team Competition fourth, third, second, third, seventh, fourth and sixth respectively.
Washington State-W
Coach: Jane LaRiviere
2003 Pac-10 Finish: Fifteenth
2003 NCAA Finish: Third
Women's Varsity Lightweight Team Notes:
Stanford-WL
Head Coach Al Acosta and the Stanford lightweight varsity eight return Kerin Lanyi, Cady Kintner, Kristina Peterson, Michelle Ramirez and Erica Bromley. Along with this core from the 2003 varsity eight that finished fifth at the IRA, Stanford adds one of the nations top recruits, Meredith Coleman and many stalwarts from the '03 novice eight who are developing into solid varsity rowers.
Georgetown-WL
Coach: Jimmy King
2003 EARWC Finish: Fourth
2003 IRA Finish: Fourth
Harvard-WL
Head Coach Cecile Tucker and the Harvard women's lightweight varsity eight are coming off a strong 2003 campaign. However the Crimson will look to turn the table in Princeton in 2004. Last season, Harvard finished runner to the Tigers at both the EAWRC Championships and IRA Championships. Harvard will compete in Black & White colors representing Radcliffe.
Princeton-WL
Head coach Heather Smith and the Tigers women's lightweight varsity eight hope to equal their 2003 season results in 2004. The task at hand is to match its EAWRC and IRA Championship performances. Athletes returning to the varsity in 2004 include, Alison Barnes, Uta Oberdoerster, Amelia Robertson, Sarah Skinner and Julia Straus.
Other Varsity Squad Notes:
North Carolina-M
A club rowing program coached by Cal alumni Steve Condrin, the Tar Heels are coming off a bronze medal performance in the varsity coxed four at the IRA Championships. North Carolina will test its speed against strong JV crews from Cal, Stanford and Navy.
Sacramento State-M
Always looking for good competition and racing experience, coach Sam Sweitzer and the CSUS varsity crew comes to Windermere to complete the field in the Freshman event. The CSUS oarsmen, who finished sixth at the WIRA Championships in 2003, will be taking on some of the top frosh programs in the country including Cal, Stanford and Penn.
Arizona State-W
Coaches Jeff Wilkinson and Kelly Vanek along with a first year club program will join the slate to take on the Stanford's first-year rowers in the novice eight event.
