By the end of racing Saturday afternoon, the San Diego Crew Classic was already done with two days of racing, and many of the classic elements of the event were on full display (tho we do wonder about the Ron Burgundy connection...)
In a matter of hours, enthusiasm coming out of San Diego went from this airport arrival vibe:
... to this WSU boat-launching vibe - it's on!
The stoke was not restricted to crews who made it to southern California, though, as evidenced by these juniors watching their masters teammates on the live stream from back home in Sammamish WA:
The Main Events
Whatever you are racing in San Diego is your own main event, but over in the marquee collegiate events, the 'heats' went mostly to form, with some crews just holding position in a 'race for lanes' mentality; one exception was when the Canadian women and Oxford Brookes appeared to bump Washington out of the final, but it turns out that, likely given Canada's exhibition status, Washington will be in the final in a seven-lane race on Sunday.
Texas looks ready to reinforce their position as the top-ranked team after winning heats in all four events they entered; Stanford won the second heat of the top women's eight, so the top two V8s from 2022 will meet up on Sunday in the final.
On the men's side, with only three entries in the top collegiate event a full pull had to wait until Sunday as Cal and Oxford Brookes pulled away from the Canadian without having to show their full hands in the race for Sunday lanes.
The Cal men and women wore patches and ribbons respectively in honor of Christoph Seifriedsberger, who died suddenly in January.
On the junior side, NAC had a good Saturday, winning their heats in both the men's and women's eights, with seven of eight NAC crews making the finals overall.
Serious parent photogs were out at strength…
… and the slo-mo game is on!
The entire regatta is being streamed, here is how to watch the replays as well as live on Sunday:
