On the last weekend of March, crews from across the country will alight on the shores of Mission Bay in San Diego for the annual San Diego Crew Classic. From novice high schoolers, to some of the best college racing assembled in years to die-hard masters, all crews will have something to prove.
They want to see that hard work on the erg all winter pay off. They want to show they can transition to sprint racing with ease and power. Above all, they want to prove they can win a championship regatta. Rivalries and bow balls are lining up, and this year's Crew Classic is sure to be a brawl on the water and a joy to watch on the shore.
On the Collegiate Women's side, the Jessop-Whittier Cup will showcase a deep roster of talented crews, with a dozen of the nation's top crews set to battle. Last year's first and second place finishers, Texas and USC, respectively, are back along with Cal, Washington State, Oklahoma, Gonzaga, UCLA, UCSB, USD, Tennessee, UVic, and Stanford, each bent on nothing short of victory.
On the Collegiate Men's side, the Copley Cup will amplify the tension with the introduction of a duel-race format. This inaugural racing style perfectly suits the stacked lineup of teams. Defending champion Cal, will go head-to-head with Yale, Navy, Penn, Stanford and Northeastern, barreling down the course to see who advances and who goes home. This new format is sure to heighten the drama for racers and spectators.
Fans packing the Stone Brewing beer garden, the brunch tent, alumni row and those swarming the numerous food trucks and vendors will be treated to constant racing from the best teams.
All crews will be looking to solidify their status and generate momentum at the spring season opener, and those on shore will enjoy a stellar regatta. Visit crewclassic.org for more information and to plan your trip to sunny San Diego for the 45th annual San Diego Crew Classic!
