In its 42nd year, the Crew Classic is in the middle of a makeover; it's not your typical mid-life crisis, but more a coming of age. Rowing is much more of a main stream sport as the rapidly growing SDRC, Cathedral, and ZLAC junior programs show.
Unfortunately, boathouse space on Mission Bay is tapped out, and there is a massively underserved youth community who would benefit from an expanded rowing and aquatics presence. To address the situation, the Crew Classic is developing a five-year roadmap to partner with the city and community to bring to anyone in the youth community who wants to participate. It won't be easy or inexpensive to achieve this goal but we have a great group of Stewards and volunteers who can lead the charge.
We are also proud to continue our 5th year of funding for the NRF with our annual fundraiser on Sat 28th at 2 PM at the NRF tent outside the beer garden, and the dollar a seat campaign, which is currently at the 2nd highest number of entries ever. We expect to almost double our funding for the NRF and our US athletes training for Rio, for whom there is a USRowing Row to Rio kickoff event outside the NRF tent on Saturday at 3pm. Please ask how you can help.
Lastly, I will mention because it always worth repeating... the Crew Classic's sole purpose is to act as a service organization to our rowers, fans, sponsors, donors, and Stewards, and we could not put this regatta on without your participation. Every year our community comes together, and our volunteers dedicate thousands of hours to making this regatta a huge success... so please remember to say thanks for a job well done.
