About Men’s Sweep at PBC: The Men’s Sweep Team at Potomac Boat Club is a competitive racing team with members ranging from athletes fresh out of college to those who have been on the water for 40 years. Our athletes compete in Open through Senior Master events at regattas throughout the year.
Notable results include: HOCR: ‘21, ‘22 Masters Four (1st, 2nd),‘19 Club Eight (1st); HOSR: ‘19 Club Eight (1st), Champ Four (1st) San Diego Crew Classic: 2017-2019 Men’s Masters A (2nd) Masters Nationals: 2013-2015 Men’s Sweep Points trophy Masters Henley: ‘18 C4+ and E4+ (1st)
Position Summary: Head coaching position located in Washington, DC. Practice times are Monday through Friday from 0515-0700, and Saturday from 0630-0830 as conditions and training plans permit and fewer or more are an option depending on goals (i.e., six days per week is not a requirement). Coach will be given discretion as to roster, boating, and strategy for each season/year with team captain consultation. Coach will be paid a monthly salary competitive with local rates and consistent with experience level. Main responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
-On-the-water coaching
-Creating seasonal training plans
-Working with the Men’s Sweep Management Committee on race entries and lineups
-Successful team performance at competitions
-Attending PBC Race Committee Meetings
-Collaborating with other PBC coaches on boat and launch availability
-Adherence to all PBC safety and other policies
Qualifications:
-Three years of previous coaching experience preferred
-Previous experience as either a rower or coxswain
-Excellent teaching, teamwork, and communication skills
-Ability to develop rowing technique and athletic conditioning in athletes of varying ages, experience, and skills
-Familiarity with the Potomac River preferred
-USRowing Level 2 coaching certification, or willingness to obtain it, preferred
-Prior to hiring, in accordance with USRowing policy, candidate must complete (or have completed within two years) a nationwide criminal background check through NCSI/SportsEngine and be up to date on SafeSport training.
—Candidate must also possess or obtain a valid boating license as well as an up-to-date (within two years) CPR/AED/First Aid certification.
About PBC: Founded in 1869, Potomac Boat Club is the oldest rowing club in the Washington, DC area and one of the best known in the country. It is home to some 300 senior members, ranging from recreational rowers to Olympic athletes. PBC hosts several successful competitive programs for scullers and sweep rowers, and has served as the home of Arlington’s Washington-Liberty High School crew, one of the first public schools to have a rowing program, since 1949.
