Despite early, rotten weather in Rotterdam (see what we did there?), racing commenced at the "Megaworlds," the combined Senior, U23 and Junior worlds today with the U23 events leading the way. With crews in every event, the USA saw 21 boats in action today.
Top USA-centric results today included Brown's Cicely Madden, who won her heat in the U23 W1x, while near-Olympian in the Men's Quad, Ben Davison, took second in his heat to advance to the quarterfinals.
The US Men's U23 pair of Jovanni Stefani and Brennan Wertz crushed out the fastest time in the event to win their heat, and US U23 women's sweep team was having a great day as well.
In H2 of the BW2-, USA has taken a huge lead over the rest of the field. They will take the top spot to the A-final #Rotterdam2016

The US U23 women's four represented, also winning their heat and also posting the fastest time in their event today, and to cap off the day, the athletes from the U23 W2- and U23 W4- took another trip down the course and won their heat in the U23 W8+ as well, although this one was tougher than the earlier races.
But coming into 500m, USA have taken the lead over NZL. NZL slipping back and GBR moving up. USA take one spot to A-final #Rotterdam2016

With the win, the USA U23 sweep women move all three crews directly to the A-Finals, well rowed!
The US U23 M8+ also delivered, qualifying for the semis.
The final heat of the BM8+ on the course now. What a race. GER takes the lead, but what a challenge from ITA and USA #Rotterdam2016

There are 13 crews entered in the U23 M8+, so the event will race heats and reps to eliminate one crew, and will also race one of the rarest rowing events in the wild, the men's eight semifinal.
The sisterly duo of Emily and Eliza Kallfelz also won their heat in the U23 women's double with a strong showing; in addition to racing the U23 event, Eliza is doubling into the Junior Women's Single this week. Also qualifying well were Kyle James and John Gleim, racing the US U23 LM2-.
Not everyone had the greatest race today (seems like a thing at this summer's elite events, whew), but FISA is being generous with the progressions.

Finally, we're warming to the idea of opening and closing ceremonies here; what a great way to feel like you are not only in the action on the water, but part of a great event.
