There's a lot of history to discover in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador; our oldest sporting event is still recognized as a vibrant, much-anticipated public holiday to this day. Evidence shows that as far back as 1816, and likely earlier, an annual rowing competition has been held on Quidi Vidi Lake as a form of friendly competition among our seafaring people. On the first Wednesday of August (weather permitting) teams of rowers compete in the Royal St. John's Regatta, cheered on by hordes of lakeside spectators enjoying the sport, as well as the various stalls, food outlets and entertainment clustered around the lake.

click to view this vid! 2012 IRAs Effects of Wind, Boat and Seed on 2000 m Times Rowing Crew

This is the second cut at the 2012 IRA 2000m finish time data. I started looking at the wind speed data, then added boat type (MV8 or M2V8) and seed order and completed a multivariate regression using MS-Excel. I collected data for the MV8 and M2V8 2000 meter times in the Semi-Finals (4 races), Petite Finals (2 races) and Grand Finals (2 races). Each race had six boats. 48 data points total. The strong headwinds of the Semi-Finals versus the strong tailwinds of the Petite and Grand Finals made a nice data set. Playlist of all 2012 IRA races: www.youtube.com

click to view this vid! London 2012 Rowing: Building the Olympic 8

Clearly having the best boat is a vital component for any rowing crew with Olympic ambitions. Which is why DSM has developed a series of innovations for both professional athletes and amateur rowers alike. Using our turane resins, we set out to improve the stiffness of the boat, making it better equipped to handle the rigors of a race. By combining it with TeXtreme carbon fiber, stiffness of the hull has been increased up to up 25%, reducing the energy loss of each stroke and thus increasing the speed.
