The Detroit Boat Club Crew circa about 1948-1954 katbaleu · September 23, 2011 An excerpt of film footage that my grandfather and family took over the years. This is footage of The Detroit Boat Club's Rowing Team sometime around 1948-1954 when my uncle. Richard Langs, was on the team. I unfortunately don't know what regattas are shown here or have any exact dates but perhaps some others might know. Please leave any info you may have about this footage in the comments. Thanks!
These shots are of regattas at Ecorse, Detroit, Philly and St. Catherinces, Ontario.
The Ecrose regatta was held on 4th of July each year attracting thousands of spectators. During this period the Great Coach Jim Rice came from NY each spring to coach crews at Wyandotte, Ecorse and Detroit. Many a young man won gold under Rice. The shells that the crews rowed were built by Gannon and Peterson two cabinet makers from Detroit. Later most of the crews in the US rowed Pococks from Seattle. Some of the singles and double shown in the Ecrose regatta were built one winter during WW2 by their members led by Larry Smith and Charles Tank. Hope I was helpful, Dan Leblanc
