Head of the Charles Regatta patriotledger · October 20, 2008 It was a cool start Sunday to the second day of the Head of the Charles Regatta in Cambridge. The early morning temperature was in the low 40s and a brisk breeze was keeping spectators bundled up along the banks of the Charles River near the Cambridge Boat Club.
The crowds grew as the morning progressed and they clapped and cheered as the rowing teams competed in the world's largest two-day rowing event.
The regatta is similar in tradition to races held in England.
'Head' races are generally three miles long. The boats race against each other and the clock, taking turns starting approximately fifteen seconds apart.
Winners of each race receive the honorary title of 'Head Of The Charles.'
The Regatta attracts over 300,000 spectators.
