Boston University took the early lead over Ohio State, but were closely followed by Cal and Harvard. Cal moved in front of OSU to take control of second, with Michigan State in fourth. Cal held on to second place and was up a length on third place Harvard as the crews crossed the 1000. In third 500, Cal and Harvard both moved back on BU. As the boats crossed the 1500 meter mark, less than one second separated the top three crews with only the top two advancing to the grand final. Cal continued its move and beat BU to the line by a seat. Harvard came up short and finished in third.

Washington jumped off the line and moved to the front as Cal and Harvard trailed with Michigan State close behind. MSU began to push Cal for second as Harvard, Ohio State and BU jockeyed for position. Washington had a ¾ length lead with Washington and MSU battling for the final qualifying spot. As the crews crossed the 500 to go, Washington was out front, with Cal leading Michigan State by 0.7 seconds, but that was as close as things would get as the crews separated with Washington finishing open water up on Cal and Cal open water ahead of Michigan State.

Princeton jumped out to the early lead, with Brown and Virginia challenging. Boston University was out with the main pack with Northeastern challenging. Across the 500, Brown pushed through Princeton. BU held third a seat or two over Virginia. By the time the crews crossed the 1000, Brown was up a length on the field, but less than a second separated place 2-4 with only the top 3 to qualify. At the 1500, with Brown in control, Virginia was second, Princeton third and BU found themselves on the bubble. BU closed the gap in the final 500 meters but fell short. Brown's winning time was an NCAA record.

Harvard took the hole shot, but Washington and Cal quickly moved to the front with Michigan pressing as well. As the crews crossed the 500, it was very tight between Washington, Cal and Harvard as Michigan tried to fight their way back into the front pack. At the 1000 when crews began to make their moves, Washington was still up on the Bears, with Michigan, Harvard, Michigan State, and Ohio State crossing in that order. At the 1500, Washington was still out front with Cal in second. Michigan was 2.5 seconds behind Cal and Harvard was 2.5 seconds out of a qualifying position. In the final 500 meters, Michigan really began to turn up the heat as they moved up on second place Cal, Harvard finished fourth, missing out on its third grand final qualifying attempt of the morning.

USC was the early leader followed by Yale and Oregon State. UC Davis moved in to the fourth position. At the 500 USC was looking comfortable at a 36, but Yale was beginning to make a move and challenge for the lead. Oregon State was a half length back on the two lead crews. Davis was fourth, Williams fifth, William Smith and Wesleyan. At the 1000 Yale made their bid for control taking a full length on USC as the crews approached the 1500. There was no change in position over the final 500 meters of the race.

In this four boat race, Ohio State Michigan and Harvard raced neck and neck through 750 meters with Michigan State falling off the pace by a few seats of open. Through the 1000, the top three crossed within a second of each other with MSU trailing by a half-length open. Harvard began to take an advantage through 1100, as Michigan and OSU trailed by about a length. Across the 1500, the top three places were bow to stern. Ohio State began to push back toward Michigan in the last 500 and rowed through them in the late stages of the race.

Washington moved out to an early lead with BU, Brown and Cal trailing. Brown moved back on UW while Cal began to separate from Virginia and Princeton. Through the 500, Washington and Brown were even in the front, while Virginia began to challenge Cal for fourth. Through the 1000 Washington maintained a 1.5 second lead on Brown with Virginia in third and Cal and BU fighting four fourth. Princeton raced in sixth. Into the final 500, Washington and Brown still led with Virginia in third and Cal and BU still fight for fourth. Washington opened things up on Brown and Cal closed on Virginia.

Michigan State moved very well off the line and established an early lead. Harvard was trailing by two seats. As the crews crossed the 500, Michigan State maintained its edge on Harvard, with Ohio State and BU trailing. As the crews approached the 1000, MSU had extended to a length lead on Harvard with Ohio State and BU trailing. With 500 to go, MSU maintained an open water lead, Harvard was second, Ohio State, and Boston third and fourth. The order did not change across the finish, but BU was surging and nearly nipped OSU.

Off the line there was no clear leader but as the crews crossed the breakage barrier, Virginia seemed to nose in front. 400 meters into the races Virginia and Brown led Michigan and Cal by a seat or two. Washington was fifth with Princeton sixth. Brown began to put the hammer down while it level for places 2-4. As the crews crossed the 1000, Brown led by nearly 5 seconds with Washington moving up to third. Michigan was fourth, with Cal and Princeton even and racing for fifth. At the 1500, Brown had a big open water advantage Virginia and Washington. UW made it move and rowed into second. Virginian was third, followed by Michigan, Princeton and Cal.

Harvard moved out to the early lead in the race, but as the crews crossed the 500, Boston University, Syracuse and Michigan State, were all within a second. They were followed by Harvard, Northeastern and Ohio State. By the 1000, Boston had taken a length on the field as Syracuse and MSU battled for second. With the Northeastern, Harvard and OSU dead even. Things didn't change much for the top three, but as the crews crossed the 1500, Northeastern had 3 seats on Harvard and Harvard had 3 seats on Ohio State. BU BU, Michigan State, Syracuse and Northeastern, remained steady through the line, but Ohio State snared fifth from Harvard.

Brown moved in to the lead off the line as Washington and Cal went with them. At the 750 Cal began to push into Brown and trailed by 2 to 3 seats. , Cal trailed Brown by 1.25 seconds at the 1000, with Virginia in third, Washington, fourth Princeton and Michigan. Virginia began to surge into Cal and as the crews crossed the 1500, Brown led by a length, and Virginia and Cal even with Washington making a bid. Over the last 500, the story was Brown lengthening out for an open water win. The Action was Washington moving from fourth to second and Virginia snaring third from Cal who was running second for most of the race.
