HS/Scholastic: Latin Challenge
June 1, 2011; Charles River

Submitted by Dale Wickenheiser.

Distance: 1.8 miles/ 1.0 miles
Conditions: Strong tail/cross-tail wind and light current. Threat of a tornado.
Comments: Annual race between the two oldest public high schools in the US. Due to a scheduling conflict, the race was moved to a weekday instead of it's usual sunday morning. For various reasons, this meant dropping the novice boat category, racing fours instead of 8's and shortening the courses each boat raced. 1st boats raced 1.8 instead of 2.4 miles. 2nd boats raced 1.0 instead of 1.8 miles. Good clean racing by all crews. In the 1st boat race, CRLS took a two foot lead after the start and then it was a slow process of moving out an inch at a time until they opened water around the inside of the second to last turn and maintained the gap. In the 2nd boat race, BLS took a slight lead and then opened a gap on the last turn that they held to the finish. Both trailing crews continued to attack until the finish.
