"Shell Games": USC vs. UCLA
November 23, 2002 - Ballona Creek to Marina del Rey
Submitted by Gene Kininmonth
Distance: 3 1/4 Miles
Conditions: Minimal incoming tide, flat conditions for all races with one foot swells by the breakwater.
Comments: USC broke an eight-year drought against its cross-town rival UCLA when its varsity crew defeated the Bruins in a 3 1/4 mile head race on November 23.
UCLA took a 1-seat lead off the start but USC rowed past to lead for the remainder of the race.
The win was the first for the USC Trojans over UCLA since its men's crew program was stripped of varsity status by the university in an effort to meet the gender equity requirements of Title IX in 1994.
