Men's Crew Sweeps Navy; Varsity Eight Sets Course Record

Annapolis, MD -- The Wisconsin men's crew team won all eight races over the Naval Academy Sunday in Annapolis, Md., capturing the Walsh Cup for winning the varsity eight race and the Fisher Cup for the most total points at the dual.

The varsity eight boat set a course record with a time of 5:34.6. Captain Nelson Williams, Matt Baldino, Matt Tucker, Dylan Cappel, Ryan Westergaard, Jeff Maples, Mark Danahy, Alex Ressi and Matt Darga beat Navy (5:37.4) to take home the Walsh Cup.

The junior varsity eight crew (Kristian Knutsen, Matt Smith, Jed Moody, Chip Kakas, Nik Wedekind, Duncan Roberts, Mike Leonardi, Steve Neumann and Mitch Hagen) crossed the finish line in a time of 5:41.7 to beat Navy's JV eight boat (5:44.6). The freshman eight boat, including Jon Shugart, Ken Price, Chad Tepley, Logan Mackay, Brian Bauer, Reed Kuehn, Mike Seelen, Scott Alwin and Jared Wayne, marked a first-place time of 5:50.9.

The two minus coxswain pair of Pat Worner and Nic Schilling (7:04.04), the four minus coxswain (6:16.5), the varsity four plus coxswain (6:25.0) and the freshman four plus coxswain (6:26.0) boats were all victorious against the Midshipmen. Wisconsin took the top two spots (6:30.0 and 6:31.8) in the open four race (the open four boats consist of two varsity athletes and two freshmen).

The Badgers will compete in the Intercollegiate Rowing Association regatta on May 28-30 to complete the 1997-98 season. The IRA Championships will take place on Lake Cooper in Camden, N.J.
