Dodge Cup - Columbia, Yale at Penn (LW men)

April 18, 1998; Schuylkill River, Philadelphia, PA

Conditions: Flat water. Wind shifted throughout racing, but was usually a moderate to light tailwind.

1st Varsity Lightweight Eight
Yale        5:40.3
Columbia    5:44.7
Penn        5:52.0
Comments: Both Columbia and Yale were within a seat of each other at the 1000m
mark.  Penn lagged behind in the first 1000, costing them the race.  Yale
slowly extended their lead over Columbia to a length and a quarter in the
last 700m. 

2nd Varsity Lightweight Eight
Yale        5:52.1
Columbia    5:57.6
Penn        6:08.4
Columbia led Yale by two seats after the start, but Yale pulled even at
700m down.  Yale moved out one length before the 1000m mark.  Yale gained a
little open water in the last 1000m, and finished a length and a quarter
over Columbia.  Penn was in third after the start, and remained in third
for the entire race.

3rd Varsity Four (Non-Lightweight Event...Yale raced with one Heavyweight)
Yale        6:48.9
Columbia A  6:52.0
Columbia B  7:11.4
Columbia led by a few seats at the 1000, and Yale moved ahead in the
last 200 meters.


1st Freshmen Lightweight Eight
Yale        5:55.7
Columbia    6:01.8
Penn        6:14.4
Racing was close for the first 1000 meters.  Columbia led by a few feet
at the 1000m mark, but Yale moved out to a two length lead in the last 700
meters.


2nd Freshmen Lightweight Four
Columbia    6:53.5
Penn        7:01.1
Yale A      7:08.1
Yale B      7:13.4
Columbia led all crews by open water at the 1000m mark and held on to
their lead for the remainder of the race.
