Varsity 8 Massachusetts 6:08.2; Dartmouth 6:13.1 Cornell 6:20.9 The Massachusetts varsity eight built a quick lead in the first 100 meters and rowed a steady race to defeat Dartmouth and Cornell in women's crew action on the Connecticut River Saturday. UMass never trailed in the 2000-meter race, finishing in 6:08.2. Dartmouth (6:13.1) pulled away from Cornell (6:20.9) after the halfway point. Second Varsity Cornell 6:22.5 Dartmouth 6:22.7 Massachusetts 6:23.5 The second varsity race was the closest in the regatta as all three crews were virtually even throughout. Cornell took first in 6:22.5, followed by Dartmouth in 6:22.7 and UMass in 6:23.5. Third Varsity Four Cornell 7:04.6 Massachusetts 7:06.0 Dartmouth 7:08.0 First Novice Massachusetts 6:27.2 Cornell 6:33.0 Dartmouth 6:34.0 Second Novice Cornell 6:43.9 Dartmouth 6:50.0 Massachusetts 6:53.0 Varsity Four B Cornell B 7:20.0 Dartmouth B 7:24.0 Massachusetts Novice 7:27.0 Dartmouth C 7:28.0 Massachusetts B: 7:40.0 HANOVER, N.H. -- The varsity result should change the New England rankings as Dartmouth came into the race third with Massachusetts sixth. The UMass varsity was runner-up at the inaugural NCAA Championship last year in Sacramento, Calif. Brown and Northeastern continue to hold down the Nos 1-2 spots, and Massachusetts will probably move up to third with Dartmouth shifting to fourth. The Big Green varsity can still qualify for the NCAA Championship, May 28-31, at Gainesville, Ga. as the top four varsity boats in New England will advance. Dartmouth next rows at the EAWRC Regatta in Connecticut on Sunday, May 10.
