The first two are Lake Wendouree in Ballarat (Victoria). It was really sad seeing all the rowing clubs around the dried up lake. The Olympic ring statue is a monument to the Melbourne 1956 Olympics. The rowing and kayaking were held on Lake Wendouree and there is also a memorial to all the Olympic athletes who have come from Ballarat.

Early Southern Sprint Photo

(January 23, 2008)
Approaching the 25th anniversary of the Southern Sprints, here is an early picture of the race on model B's I believe in the end of the 80's. Probably one of the first races where electronic monitoring on the good ole commodore 64 days. Event looks like a high school race. Only 8 lanes of racing compared to today's events. Casey Baker of Resolute then FIT before is the one in blue to the left, 2nd one in. A young Tom Bohrer is standing in front of the Mel Hi Gym door. The other heavyweight to Tom's right is Mike Connors. The woman in shorts in the front is Billy Kaye Brown (one of the first NWRA Lightweight Championship singles title holders). A Little history.

I saw this at the Sagamore Hotel-SoBeach. The Sagamore is an 'art' hotel with lots of different artist represented throughout the hotel. This a new piece by Jose Bedia. Rarely do you see an abstract of rowing that actual looks correct (looks a lot like a Scott Roop production) . There is no title but I think "Row-Her" could work.

Rowing in Aceh
Submitted by: Charley Sullivan
(January 5, 2008)
From Margaret Sullivan in Banda Aceh last year after the tsunami: "We were crossing the Aceh river again today and saw the boats coming so got out and got some pictures. There is indeed a scull (looking like it may be locally made and rowed by an orang asli [local]) and three other boats that he is clearly coaching. They came barreling down the river almost to the bridge and I got some not bad images. This one shows two of the three boats. The person with the hat appears to be a girl so let's hear it for women's rowing--she is holding her own with the guys."
