Upper Natoma is a brand new team. The varsity women qualified for Nationals in their Varsity 8, Varsity 4, Light 4 and Varsity pair. This team worked extremely hard and had to trailer in their boats and rig them every day in order to practice. They got three bronze medals and one gold. The light four won by open water. This team has done amazing work in just one year, and they are definitely a team to keep an eye on in the future!
I think Dan from Tempe did a terrific job coaching the two junior girls from Arizona. Let's remember that the Tempe juniors row at 4 AM in the morning to avoid the heat. Something I would never have done... maybe. Dan was an assistant coach to Igor in 1996 when their 4x won the silver medal at the Olympics. Another great coach is at Vesper, I will talk about him tomorrow on the Rowing Illustrated radio. GO TEMPE, you desert rats :-)
