Washington shows signs of dominating the V8's for the foreseeable future. Their Frosh8 is almost as fast as the V8. But the Huskies bring another huge change in the wind - their racing style. I've never seen all boats on a team consistently race this way and still win. Their second 1000, and especially the last 500 are their strongest! How many races were won in the last 10 strokes after the lead boats had exhausted themselves just trying to keep WA honest? These results expose a new racing style and underneath something very different in training to achieve such a consistent never-die-pull-through-by-a-short-deck discipline. This left coast Tiger tips his oar to the whole WA program for a fine season!
Quite a year for sweeps in the Heavy 8+'s at championship regattas . . . Sprints (Brown), ACRA (Michigan) and the IRA (Washington), with the last one being the most impressive. Congrats UW!
sweep. that is all you need to know. nothing says best program in the nation better than a gold in every eight race, a gold in one of the fours and a close silver in another.
i recognize the total dominance of washington but look at what BU accomplished... they jumped up by 80 points as a whole team and put a 2v and 1v into grands. The 2v placed the highest in team history and the 1v tied for the best finish in team history, and all of this with first year head coach Tom Bohrer. They have been nominated 3 times and its about time we give some credit where its due
Truspeed, I am impressed by the progress that BU has made as well. However, this Washington team has not been recognized this season either. To overlook what they did at Rowing's Men's National Championships would render this poll ridiculous. Frankly, you need look no further than the California V4 nomination for your answer. California's 4 put in a remarkable performance, but they are nominated for being the "only boat to beat a Washington team". The same Grand Finals that you cite were won by Washington by several seconds over BU. However, having made my case twice, I would heartily recommend Tom Bohrer as Coach of the Year.
A few weeks ago, this forum awared Crew of the Week to Brown for sweeping the eights events at the Eastern Sprints. Washington demonstrated a similar dominance over the field in the IRA, which included Brown, Harvard, Wisco, Stanford, and Cal. From the Open 4, to the overpowering Freshmen 8 to the powerful 2nd V8 who commanded every race, to the V8 (which closed the Grand Final with the fastest 500 meters of the entire 3 days of the regatta, into a slight headwind) the entire program demonstrated its dominance. There is no question for anyone who was there.
