To add to what cityflat has said, the Toreros have made USD history again and again this season. They won the San Diego Crew Classic Cal Cup by more than open water, then went on to beat long-time rival Gonzaga by .2 and .3 seconds at WCC and WIRAs (respectively). San Diego has never accomplished this and they deserve recognition for their hard work!
Hi everyone! I've been rowing with the St. Ursula Women's N8 for the past season. This past weekend has shown us what it really means to be rowers. Finally all our hard work paid off in two incredible wins. The feeling that coursed through our exhausted bodies as our parents held up number one fingers from land. As high school freshman we are blown away that people would even notice the great accomplishments of our weekend. We are just normal girls whose hard work has finally paid off. We can beat freshman and high school juniors, but only with your help can we compete against colleges of our dreams! Vote for our Freshman 8!!
Harvard Lightweight V8 definitely deserves this one. They performed incredibly this past weekend (and also throughout the entire season it seems). Watching the video from their race gave me chills... they were down on Princeton and put on such an impressive move and held on through the sprint. That takes not only skill but also guts and mental toughness. They row well and they row hard.
14 and 15 year old rowers who pulled ahead of the JV's to win the race. Good genes in that boat including a niece whose two uncles rowed at the Worlds in the 80's. Two grandparents are traveling almost 1000 miles to see them race this weekend in Cinncinnati. What a sport!! It makes parents cry to see the comraderie that grows and grows among and between crews internationally. I'm back. I'm hooked. Thanks for row2K.
WSU gets my vote because they are a club team that had the race of their lives. While all these other varsity teams spent the fall rowing 5-6 days a week, WSU was fundraising. They pay a ton out of pocket just for the privilage to row, and winning WIRAs is their reward. GO COUGS
Agreed. Those weekends, often spent in freezing temperatures, building fences, demolishing walls, painting houses, etc. in their community of Pullman, is hard and grinding work. These guys work so hard, both on and off the water, while maintaining good grades, are to be commended for their devotion to crew.
At WIRAs, USD's Varsity8 had a sick rower and had to replace her with a Varsity 4 rower (after she had won gold a few hours earlier) and still beat Gonzaga by .3seconds, second time ever beating them, the first being 2 days earlier at WCC by .2seconds. That should be even more of a reason to vote for the team!
i wouldnt call that comin back from bein down. just chuggin lika freight train. how bout that joker with the bucket hat lovin on the carbon with his inside hand?.... must be an exeter kid. and thats gotta be a gonzaga kid up in the bow, ridin dirty. shoulders high, swingin low just sayin
Please vote for the Washington State University Men's V8. As a former rower for the team and a proud Cougar I can vouch that the guys in that boat are some of the hardest working and most dedicated rowers I have ever met. After a 1 second loss at the hands of a scholarship-laden crew from Gonzaga just two weeks earlier these guys wanted nothing more than to prove that they can compete with the best of them. Not taking anything away from the other crews in this poll who are very deserving of their nominations, but every rower in that V8 came into college as true novice and it is about time that they get some recognition. And I wouldn't be surprised if they gave the Big Blue from Michigan a run for their money at ACRA's this year : ) Watch out OKC, Washington State is about to shake up the club rowing scene.
Sorry about the scholarship comment, I've been misinformed. Thanks for the correction though, good to know. If you're a northwest rowing fan which it sounds like you are I hope that you still voted for WSU.
hey "flatcity" - it`s OK to talk up your own team, but please stop talking down other teams. OU has only 3 coaches and a graduate assistant ~ no more than any other program. OU has no more resources than your program does either. Also the OU 1V8 boat has 5 freshman (all sweepers) in it - check the boatings and roster - two of which are complete novices.
I am sorry if it comes off as talking down. I know 20 full rides and good coaching has potential. I know the coaches history (i do my research) including taking UCF to NCAA. Walk ons can make good rowers and club team are made of them because they don't have money to hand out. WSU beat teams like UCSD who when to IRA last year. That is so great! Being a club team is hard. I rowed for one and when Varsity programs were training we were raising money.
You seem to be obsessed with the fact that scholarships guarantees success...not necessarily so! I know for a fact that USD gives full rides, OU might have access to 20 scholarships, but they are only in their 2nd year with just one recruiting class, so their current class would at best, only have a handful. In fact, I would say USD has awarded more scholarship monies than OU to their current squad.
Yes! Awesome job OU! It takes a lot more than "resources" to make a great team and you girls have what it takes-- discipline, heart and determination. Boomer Sooner!
Congrats to OU, to a program that has NEVER had a varsity program until now, to be that close to Texas in only your second year as a program speaks volumes about your program and your coaching staff, congrats on a great showing at Big 12's, your time is coming soon enough!
Congrats Oklahoma for a great race at Big XII's against teams that have been around a lot longer than you. You guys showed great determination for your second year as a team and pushed hard till the very last stroke!! Boomer Sooner!
USD was LAST in the WCC just back in 2007, but under a new coach they have been able to keep getting better every year and WON the title this year.
The girls are amazing. They share such a great bond .... when all other teams had left for home after WIRA USD went over to the Davis tent where the girls were having a BBQ to show their support for the Davis team after being cut.
Harvard for sure, all across the board v lights and frosh lights undefeated 10-0 record, and coming from behind to edge out princeton. They get my my vote.
After almost 38 years of club rowing, WSU Mens V8+ manages to best a very competitive line-up at the WIRAs and for the first time in history, the hard working boys of the Palouse pulled off a win. I think this deserves a vote for Crew of the Week!
I know this creates work for someone, but one feature that would be nice is if there was a brief explanation (or link to article?) as to why each crew has been nominated. Some are clear - others are fairly cryptic......
in 14 years Gonzaga has only lost the title twice! The last time they lost to LMU who had tied in the points but won the V8 therefore took home the title.
USD has never won the WCC. The V8 also pulled out a silver medal at WIRA just 2 days later where they have never placed higher than bronze. To top it off they had to do a last second change in the V8 right before they launched for the WIRA final because of illness (as noted in the press release). They have had a AMAZING season which included a race with OSU and UCLA where the V8 finished about 4 seconds behind UCLA and 1 second behind OSU. USD made program history this last weekend at the WCC and WIRA championships.
vote for WSU! WSU has never won an 8+ event at WIRAs, let alone the V8+! WSU also overcame a loss to rival Gonzaga two weeks prior, and managed to beat GU by more than 4 seconds at WIRAs
