Regarding United States women's Olympic medals in rowing. The distance for the Beijing Games was also 2000 metres, -- in 2008. If you're talking about an event that's specifically about the women's sculling team, it's not one hundred percent clear. The 1984 boat did race 1000 meters, as did the 1976 boat(s). The 1984 women's sculling crew sounds like it put in a great race to get the medal, but the 2012 boat, the 8+ for example was not the first woman's rowing team to race 2000 metres at an Olympic event and win a medal. The 2012 sculling crew I guess were the first in that boat class to medal at the Olympics over that 2000m distance.
I really don't understand how a junior crew can be winning this poll (I mean I do understand, but I wish people would be a little bit more objective rather than vote for people they know). To win things at the junior level is one thing, but the stakes are so much higher and the competition much closer at the international (hell, the collegiate level too). For me, Washington sweeping the IRA (in a year where they were supposed to be "weak"), Harvard undefeated and dominant (without two internationals), US WV8+ and NZL M2- doing what they did not only in the Olympics but this olympic cycle, never mind some of the others whom I haven't mentioned...not to take anything away from the strokes, but it's all on a totally different level than winning Youth Nats and Canadian Henley.
both the junior crews in the poll as well as all the college and national crews have done an amazing job this past year but you should realize that the junior crews are the olympians of our future! i applaud oakland strokes in their achievements as thriving young athletes but i also respect the hard work the college crews and olympians put in to their sport.
There is no need to discount the hard work that both junior crews in the poll have done. They have beaten every other junior crew to make this poll. The strokes won all of those races by open water, thus proving their dominance in the youth level of rowing.
I don't think it is fair to belittle youth rowing like that. According to their info they also won the Head of the Charles and San Diego Crew Classic, which are both huge regattas. I think you should get off your high horse and realize that good rowing has to begin somewhere.
It’s not belittling to say that collegiate and national team rowing are simply on a different level than high school. What they did was impressive, however to say that their accomplishment is on par with that of a collegiate championship sweep let alone the dedication and effort it takes to win an Olympic medal is ludicrous. We are talking about an Olympic gold medal. Arguably the single highest award an athlete can receive.
The US women who won the silver medal in 1984 raced 1000m. Thus the row2k statement that the 2012 quad was the first to win an Olympic medal since women began to race 2000m is correct.
