Something else to note, Delaware's other varsity boats also beat Penn and Columbia. To sweep two different ivy league sprints teams, in the same day, in two different locations, is difficult enough as is. Add in the fact that it is a club team and they are a fairly young program (especially compared to their competition), and you have my "crew of the week". I wonder if this kind of an upset has ever happened on the women's side of the sport. It is time to bring Delaware back to Eastern Sprints.
impressive across the boards. look to UD to beat another sprints crew or two. BU crushed brown, nice work. USC comes from seemingly nowhere. Bama-not bad. But hats off to you Cornell ladies for taking it too the dominant natty champs. Hats off.
No matter who wins this poll, Delaware will be my "crew of the week." Watching the UD boat careen down the course, with its rowers in various interpretations of their uniform, followed at not-even-close range by the slickly styled Penn Crew, would root for Delaware. Kinda reminds you of Vesper vs. Harvard in 1964. Go UD...hope to see you at Sprints!
Great weekend for the Delaware Lightweight mens crew. A club team composed of dedicated young men who raise there own money to compete at the highest level for the love of the sport. Is that not what collegiate sports is supposed to be about? Remember The Amateurs. Time to bring Delaware Mens Lights back to Eastern Sprints and let the chips fall where they may
Nearly half of that Bama' boat was filled with true sophomore athletes. They took an outside lane 6 placement, in less than ideal water, and made the most of it. I watched on the computer link as they started to sprint at about 1100 meters and never stopped the push. Great race for a very young team.... This same group was just 12 seconds off the #15 ranked Clemson V1 a couple of weeks ago. Up and coming crew for sure...Go Bama
Bear Bryant, when AD at 'Bama, once colorfully stated that he would never fund "a sport where you sit on your a** and go backwards," when asked to add rowing. Bet he'd be proud, if grudgingly, of the Crimson Tide women this weekend. Good going, ladies. Nice showing for a young program.
It would be interesting to compare Alabama's budget or Cornell's budget with Delaware's. Last time I checked, club teams cost the rowers money. To defeat, not one but two, sprints teams is much more notable.
when I first saw those results posted at first I thought it was a mistake. So I looked on Ud's website and saw that the times and venues would have worked. It took about five minutes for it all to sink in but when I realized what they did my jaw hit the floor.
Great weekend of racing for the ALABAMA Women's Varsity 8+ at the2011 San Diego Crew Classic, Cal Cup Champions!! Their first trip to the West Coast!! ROW TIDE!!!
Still it does beg the question as to why Bama, being a D-I school with a gigantic women's athletic program (Title IX to counteract the monstrosity that is their football program), isn't competing in league with other large D-I state schools like USC, Cal, Michigan, Wisco, UVA, etc. If you compare times between their race and the Jessop-Whittier cup OR compare margins between crews they've faced who have rowed against other big D-I programs (like Tulsa, who Bama here beat by 1 second but who was steamrolled by No. 20 Radcliffe by upwards of 20 seconds), its interesting...I think for OW USC or Cornell pulled off some greater upsets
Alabama isn't fully competitive with those larger teams yet because they are a much younger program. Maturity in a program brings better recruits which in turn enables the stronger programs to continually get faster. Younger teams like Alabama (in their 5th year) are only now establishing depth within the team and it's starting to show.
Like said above. When comparing Alabama's 5 years of experience to USC's 10+ years or Cornell's 30+ years this is a big step in the right direction. This just goes to show Alabama will certainly become competitive with the big contenders as they continue to grow and develop. Huge congrats to USC though, they definitely deserve the vote.
What about Oklahoma's three years of experience racing in the much more competitive Whittier Cup and winning the petite final over No. 11 UCLA? The Oklahoma 4+ also defeated Stanford for 3rd in the grand final. Alabama was not the youngest crew or the most impressive at Crew Classic. My vote's for USC.
That may be true, but the fact remains Cornell beat the NCAA tournament winner from last year. They didn't even make the NCAA tournament last year, this kind of upset almost never happens in rowing.
Just so everyone is aware, the Cornell Women's V8 was ranked 17th last year in the polls, they beat the Yale Women's V8 which came in 1st at NCAA's last year. This was an amazing victory for Cornell. Go Big Red!!
Not exactly... 6 of the 9 members of last year's NCAA champion boat graduated. Cornell beat an entirely different team - we all know last year's rankings mean nothing in this year's racing.
