IRA/USRowing Collegiate Poll
Yale University Varsity and Lightweight Men Rank First, Stanford Women Hold
April 27, 2016
Yale University ended its dual racing schedule undefeated after taking down both Cornell and Princeton to win the Carnegie Cup for the third consecutive year, finishing first in the week five USRowing Coaches Poll.
Yale had 13 first-place votes and finished the season as the only undefeated Ivy League school with the Eastern Sprints coming up May 15 in Worcester, Mass. The University of California moved up from number four to number two after sweeping the University of Washington in the 105th Schoch Cup on the Redwood Shores course.
Princeton University finished third in the poll, followed by Washington, which earned one first-place vote. Harvard University closed out the top five.
In the lightweight men’s poll, Yale University held the top spot after sweeping Dartmouth College last weekend in Hanover, N.H. The Yale lights earned all nine first-place votes. Columbia University broke last week’s tie for second place after defeating Cornell University to win the Geiger Cup Saturday for the first time since 2013. Columbia closed out the weekend defeating Dartmouth to retain the Subin Cup.
Princeton University ranked third. Cornell was fourth and the United States Naval Academy was fifth.
Stanford University’s No. 1-ranked lightweight women were off last week but remained the top pick in the lightweight women’s poll with six first-place votes.
Boston University followed in second after winning the Lightweight Beanpot against Harvard-Radcliffe and Massachusetts Institute of Technology on Boston’s Charles River for the first time in the program’s four-year existence.
“When things come together like they did on Saturday, it says a lot,” said head coach Malcolm Doldron. “It reinforces the things we do every day. It helps to validate some of the sacrifices that everybody makes. I think it’s great for our fans, our alumni and the BU community to see a young program like ours step up and do something that hasn’t been done before.”
