USRowing Coaches Poll Honors Go to Yale, Cornell and Stanford in Week Three
April 14, 2016
Yale University took on Dartmouth College last weekend on the Housatonic River in Derby, Conn., and held on to both the Olympic Axe trophy and the number-one ranking for the men's varsity eight in the third regular season USRowing coaches poll.
In the lightweight men’s poll, Cornell University clinched the top position and Stanford University held on to number one in the lightweight women’s poll.
Yale had 11 first-place votes and continued an impressive season of competition, besting Dartmouth in all four of its races on a day when gusting winds changed conditions throughout the regatta.
"We had a solid piece and were pleased with the result," said senior Kamil Sadik, who sat two-seat in the fourth varsity. "Now, we're just focused on producing faster times every time we get the chance to line up against another crew."
The University of Washington also had a solid weekend, sweeping all of its events against the University of Oregon and Washington State University Saturday on Mountlake Cut in Seattle, Wash. Washington earned two first-place votes and held second. Princeton University finished third, followed by the University of California.
Brown University and Harvard University tied at fifth.
In the lightweight men’s poll, Cornell University was ranked first and earned six first-place votes following Friday evening victories over the University of Pennsylvania and Harvard University to retain the Matthews Trophy and Leonard Cup and extended its current win streak to 17 consecutive head-to-head victories.
"Special thanks to the people behind the scenes who helped us deliver a Friday evening race event here on the Cayuga Inlet," said Chris Kerber, Henry E. Bartels '48 Head Coach of Lightweight Rowing. "All the athletes and coaches would agree, it was special."
Columbia University and Yale University tied for second place. Columbia edged the Navy Midshipmen’s varsity eight to retain the WIT Cup. The Lions’ first boat is 2-0 on the year and has won eight of their last nine regular season races. Yale swept Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the Georgetown University on Boston’s Charles River Saturday won the James C. Joy Cup for the 37th consecutive year.
"Early season races in Boston can have some really terrible conditions, but this time the Joy Cup crews lucked out with some decent cold weather with no rain for once. Host M.I.T. did a great job providing a positive racing experience for all. The day was a good opportunity for our guys to test our early spring legs," said coach Andy Card.
Princeton University and Harvard University rounded out the top five.
Traveling to Mercer Lake in West Windsor, N.J., proved fruitful for Stanford University last weekend when the lightweight women took three grand final victories in the Knecht Cup on Sunday to win the lightweight crown. Stanford will continue its east coast tour this weekend with races in Boston Saturday and Sunday in the Lightweight Invitational.
Stanford earned all seven first-place votes to remain on top, followed in second by Boston University and the University of Wisconsin in third. Harvard-Radcliffe University and MIT rounded out the top five.
