Pocock CRCA Poll
Showdown For Brown and Cal, Barry and Bates Hold in the USRowing/CRCA Coaches Poll
April 13, 2016
Some of the highest ranked schools in the USRowing/Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association Division I poll, will get the chance to race each other this weekend at the Lake Natoma Invitational in Rancho Cordova, Calif.
The biggest showdown will see Brown University take on the University of California, programs which finished first and second in the DI poll for the third consecutive week. Barry University and Bates College held positions in the DII and DIII rankings in this week's regular season poll, presented by Pocock Racing Shells.
The Bears earned 23 first-place votes to rank first in the DI poll, while Cal took two first-place votes to finish second. University of Virginia was third. The Ohio State University and Yale University rounded out the top five.
Brown took over the top of the rankings in the second week of regular season polling from preseason favorite Ohio after defeating both the Buckeyes and Princeton University. Brown followed that with victories over Harvard-Radcliffe University and Dartmouth College the following weekend.
California has consistently ranked second in 2016 polls and continued a strong showing this season at the 43rd San Diego Crew Classic, scoring wins in the collegiate women’s varsity eight, second varsity eight, third varsity eight, and varsity four races.
The two schools will meet this weekend at the Lake Natoma Classic, which is hosted by Sacramento State University and will include the following top-20 ranked schools: Brown (1), California (2), Stanford University (7), University of Wisconsin (12), Gonzaga University (15), University of Iowa (16) and Notre Dame (18), along with Sac State and Loyola Marymount University. California won the battle last year, taking the final over Brown and Stanford and capturing the team title.
In DII polling, Barry held its number one raking and claimed all five first-place votes. The Bucs continued a strong season, winning the club four and club eight events in the DI/DII Knecht Cup final last weekend on Mercer Lake, West Windsor, N.J. The University of Central Oklahoma was ranked second and Florida Institute of Technology was third. Mercyhurst University and Nova Southeastern University finished fourth and fifth.
"You should have seen them race on Saturday in rain and 28 degrees," said Barry University coach Boban Rankovic. "When they got off the water, they were soaked and could not talk with how cold they were. The day before we left it was 85 and sunny at home. I'm really proud for the great weekend of racing, considering all the outside elements."
Barry is scheduled to compete in the SSC Championships on April 29 at Nathan Benderson Park in Sarasota, Fla.
Division III Bates College took all 10 first-place votes, continuing to lead the pack in that poll after its top two eights swept a five-team field on Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, Mass. Bates beat Wellesley College, Trinity College, Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), and Rochester Institute of Technology.
Wesleyan University ranks second in the fourth week poll and Wellesley College finished third. Williams College and Ithaca College completed the top five.
