Men's College Varsity 8 RPI Ratings
RPI Ratings for June 10, 2015
June 10, 2015
Although there are a number of variations, the simplest and most common RPI is a (25/50/25) weighted average of three factors:
We adopted this formulation. To compute the RPI, we converted race outcomes into wins and losses, and so if a team came in second in a four boat race, we would count one loss and two wins. Wins and losses are only counted within category (e.g. DI RPIs reflect DI matchups only, etc.), and all 2015 race results posted to row2k.com are included in the computation (including results from heats, reps, and semis).
You’ll see a Strength of Schedule (sos) figure posted as well . These are a weighted average of the 2nd and 3rd RPI components, following the weights in the RPI (so sos = (2/3) opp%wins + (1/3) oppopp%wins). Sometimes, RPIs are presented as 25% %wins + 75% sos.
It is well known that RPIs require a fair amount of data, and so it only makes sense to produce these towards the end of the racing season. We will be updating these weekly for the remainder of this season, and will start again next year around this time.
