1. How have you prepared differently for this quadrennial than previous cycles?
After two Olympics in the eight I wanted to spend some time learning about myself as a rower and I thought the best way to do it was by doing something completely different. I spent a good chunk of time rowing in the single and it was an eye-opening/grueling experience but I believe it helped me grow as a rower. When I went back to the training center I was able to incorporate the things I learned into the training and I also was able to take nothing for granted and realized how lucky I was to be a part of the training group.
2. Any/Most important advice for first time Olympians?
Trust your teammates intentions unequivocally and focus on yours entirely. Nothing else matters.
3. What was your state of mind like sitting in the starting block of your first Olympic race?
We had been watching the 'Die Hard' series in Chula Vista that winter and I was obsessed with John McClane. Right before the start Caryn turns around and says "Hey Elle, Yippee ki yay ****** *********" So I guess my state of mind was John McClane like. But physically my heart was pumping out of my throat I was so nervous.
4. What's different this time around/what will you do differently at this Olympics?
I have a greater sense of appreciation for my teammates and coaches and the experience in general.
5. Do you feel older/better/wiser/stronger/other?
Definitely all four. Just having years of experience I think makes you wiser in that you've seen things you thought weren't possible, less naive. And physically I feel I am just starting to hit my prime.
6. Does the phrase "the Olympics" ring differently the next time around?
This is my third Olympics and it is interesting how it feels similar to my first in that I feel almost giddy and in awe that I am a part of this team. I would say however I am more aware of the fact that the Olympics is simply just an amazing opportunity we have created for ourselves and it's up to us what we do with it. To me that is exciting.
7. As far as regattas go, comparing the olympics to different races (Worlds, Lucerne), is it a better or different regatta, or just higher stakes?
Yes, it's different because it's the race that you have been dreaming about racing in for however long. It's the race that has gotten you out of bed when your body hurts everywhere or the race that has pushed you to new speeds or the race that has led you to spend that extra five minutes every day to make those technical changes. But obviously what you have been doing leading up to this point has worked so you might as well keep doing what you have been doing.
