1. What inspired you to go to your first rowing practice; was there anything memorable about it?
My first rowing practice was a 2k indoor erg race. My friend, Bryce Koch (Pochapsky), was a coxswain on my high school team who encouraged me to give rowing a try. During my warm-up, I was actually learning the sequence of the stroke and what the numbers meant. My coach told me to hold a specific split number and during my piece I was holding a faster number but didn't realize that was better. It was very confusing, but I just missed 3rd place.
2. Was there a practice, race or other event when you fell in love with the sport, or when you knew you might not be too bad at rowing? When you thought you could make the national team?
At the start of my first international race in 2004 at the Junior World Rowing Championships in Banyoles, Spain hearing the call command of "The United States Of America." I got chills and told myself this is what I wanted to do.
3. Best race/practice, worst race/practice?
In 2014 at the World Cup in France, the best and worst race was when the entire eight doubled up in the pair final an hour before our eight final. We had a very rough start in the eight, but came back from a boat length behind to catch Canada in the last 50m.
4. Best/Anything you've done in the sport no one knows about?
I have rowed on three different rivers at the same time. In Pittsburgh, there is a point in which the Monongahela, Allegheny, and Ohio Rivers join.
5. Any/Most important advice for young rowers?
Take one step at a time...make small goals in order to reach your ultimate goal...don't be afraid to embrace the pain.
