1. What inspired you to go to your first rowing practice?
I had been playing football for a couple of years and one of the requirements was going out for a spring sport. My cousin had been rowing for a couple years and said I should give it a shot. From then on I was hooked. Instead of football that fall season I took up rowing again and haven’t stopped since.
2. Was there a moment that you thought you might be able to make the national Team?
The first time I made the U23 Team was about the time that I thought going on to the Senior Team might be a real possibility. We went out there, raced hard, and earned a silver medal. I knew after that if I kept putting work in that I might have a chance down the road at the senior level.
3. Best race/practice, worst race/practice?
Best Race:
I’ve been incredibly fortunate to be a part of some incredible teams and boats over the years that there are a number of great races that stick out in my mind, but the best race for me has to be winning the Final Qualification Regatta this year so that we could go to the Olympics. Our backs were against the wall, and we came together as a boat and won the right to continue racing and representing our country. It was some of the most exciting and stressful moments of my career.
Worst Race:
My worst race came in the form of a practice before IRAs in 2011. Ty Otto and I were racing for the final seat of our varsity 8 that season and had been racing against each other most of the spring. We went the final weekend before leaving and did 2 by 2k. Ty smoked me, and it wasn’t even close. It was a tough result to stomach, but it’s always about how you rebound.
4. Most important advice for young Rowers:
Always make sure the most important thing is what’s right in front of you. If you have a goal to win a big race at some point in the season it will be the practices that you go through and the training you put in that will give you your highest chance at succeeding. Always get a little bit better every day.
