1. What inspired you to go to your first rowing practice; was there anything memorable about it?
I began rowing in high school at Oakland Strokes to get in shape for the pole vault. We learned to row in enormous Shoenbrods racing shells, each of which that took at least 15 novice girls to lift. I spent my first few months on the novice team pulling splinters out of my calves from the wooden decks of those boats.
My technique in high school was a work in progress. One coach compared my rowing to a “bull in a china shop.”
2. Was there a practice, race or other event when you fell in love with the sport, or when you knew you might not be too bad at rowing? When you thought you could make the national team?
I was told I wasn’t “good enough” a lot. I failed a lot. I lost a lot of races. I think that helped me make the Olympic team.
3. Best race/practice, worst race/practice?
One great memory is with the Princeton JV in 2005. The previous fall I had been told that I would never be allowed to row again for medical reasons. I had waged a fairly protracted battle with doctors and administrators just to be allowed back on the team. This impacted me both physically and mentally. By May I had been out of the boat for six months, my fitness level had deteriorated, and I had been placed on beta blockers that caused me significant fatigue.
With only two weeks before Eastern Sprints, I was put in the seven seat of the JV boat and allowed to bang around until I remembered how to row. I can only imagine how disruptive it was for the rest of the boat, but my teammates were patient, gracious and supportive.
Worst practice was 2012 when I realized my dream of racing at the Olympics in London was over.
4. Best/Anything you've done in the sport no one knows about?
I broke 87 minutes for the 20k Lake Samish loop in the 1x. (Hi Seth!)
5. Any/Most important advice for young rowers?
Bravery is not the same thing as fearlessness. I think it is likely the opposite. In my view, it is knowing exactly how challenging or painful the future will be and taking that first step. It is actively facing your fears.
Be brave.
