1. What inspired you to go to your first rowing practice; was there anything memorable about it?
In high school I was a runner but did not wish to continue in college so I turned to rowing. However I did not find rowing until my sophomore year after really struggling though my freshman year. Not only did I feel as if I did not belong to something, I had also put on the freshman 30. Oregon State Women's Rowing gave me an opportunity to tryout and be a part of environment that kept me physically and mentally healthy. One of the most memorable things was the turnout of women on the first day of tryouts, it was about 80.
2. Was there a practice, race or other event when you fell in love with the sport, or when you knew you might not be too bad at rowing? When you thought you could make the national team?
Rowing was definitely not a love at first stroke sport for me. It was a sport that constantly challenged me every single day, but at the same time even at my lowest points it never crossed my mind to stop. I think I realized that I could take it somewhere after my first year of U23 rowing. I was in the LW4x with some awesome and strong women.
3. Best race/practice, worst race/practice?
It's hard to pick a best race or practice, but one race that really stood out for me was in 2009 at the PAC-10 Championships. As a program it had been a long time since the Varsity 8 had won a medal. That day there was an unspoken feeling in the boat that things were going to change. Coming of the line we were 6 th through the 1000m mark. Our boat just seemed to shift at that point and we slowly moved into fourth by the 500 to go. It was an awesome feeling of flow as everyone just clenched down and walked through UW in the last 200m.
I can't really think of a worst race. There were definite races that I was not pleased with my performance and the outcome, but I always have tried to learn from this experiences so as not to repeat them.
4. Best/Anything you've done in the sport no one knows about?
When I showed up to my first U23 camp I had never sculled. We were each assigned a single and told to go row 16k. I quietly voiced that I had never sculled before. The coach just stared at me then finally said, "Fine, you go erg 16k". The next day I was put into the expedited sculling lessons in which I flipped more times than I would like to admit. 6 weeks later I was the bow seat of the LW4x at the U23 World Championships.
5. Any/Most important advice for young rower
Never stop learning and trying to improve yourself. Take advice and learn from all the people who surround you, whether it is a teammate, family member, rival, or coach. Be able to shake of the bad stuff because it will only hold you down.
