1. What inspired you to go to your first rowing practice; was there anything memorable about it?
I played soccer as a kid but broke my leg twice in 7 th and 8 th grade, so I really needed to find a new sport! My dad and I were sifting through the sports my high school offered and when I pointed to rowing he said "no way, you can't row, it would be way too hard for you and you'd quit"?"--so I IMMEDIATELY decided to go out for the team. The most vivid memory of my first practice was not being able to run a mile and thinking I would NEVER be able to run a mile.
2. Was there a practice, race or other event when you fell in love with the sport, or when you knew you might not be too bad at rowing? When you thought you could make the national team?
I rowed for two years in high school, and fell in love with rowing when I finally broke 8 minutes on my 2k. I felt like if I could pull that 2k, I could do ANYTHING I put my mind to. Rowing was so empowering to me. I didn't have any national team aspirations until Mary Whipple recommended I try out for the U23 team my freshman year of college. She was helping out at the UW boathouse that year and told me all about what the U23 team was and how to apply and what to expect from camp. I was young and really intimidated at first… it was my first selection camp of any kind.. But It was the first year FISA had a U23 Women's 8+, so it was cool (and again empowering!) that we were all experiencing 8+ camp for the first time.
I was also really lucky to row with some exceptional guys at UW, who were competing for their respective U23 teams. They helped give me confidence as an athlete and made me feel like I could be successful at the next level.
3. Best race/practice, worst race/practice?
Maybe "best"? isn't the right word, but favorite practice… in high school we went to a 4H camp for spring break. The water was so clear and beautiful, and being able to swim after the row was amazing. I was coxing the JV boat (which always has more fun), and every time we landed someone would hop out of the boat early, swim underneath, and hang on to the gunwales while everyone else rowed. We called it Navy Seal… I'm really sorry to my high school coach, Dan Bertossa, if this is the first time you are hearing about "˜Navy Seal' :) It was a BLAST.
4. Best/Anything you've done in the sport no one knows about?
Two years ago I was coxing the USRowing Women in the champ 8+ at Head of the Charles, and am 100% positive that I cut a buoy on the last turn… I told my boat and my coach after the race, and I was so embarrassed to have that +10 seconds next to our time. But apparently nobody saw because the penalty was never issued! That was my one freebie… we lost anyway, so it only mattered to my ego.
5. Any/Most important advice for young rowers?
Don't be afraid of failure. I learned the most from the races that I lost and the times I didn't make the team or the boat I wanted to make... and am always learning more from my mistakes than my successes. Think critically about yourself and find a happy medium between pride in your accomplishments and the awareness of knowing where you can improve.
