1. What inspired you to go to your first rowing practice; was there anything memorable about it?
I went to my first rowing practice because I wanted to be like my older brother, Wells. He's two and a half years older than me and started rowing his freshman year of high school and fell in love with the sport. I showed up to practice and being 6 feet tall immediately got boated. I remember it was cold and a girl in the boat kept yelling at me to "set the boat" and I had no clue what she was talking about. It was a pretty bad time, but I kept coming back!
2. Was there a practice, race or other event when you fell in love with the sport, or when you knew you might not be too bad at rowing? When you thought you could make the national team?
When I made the junior national team is when I really started to love rowing. It was great being with strong, competitive women who were simply excited to go fast. But the real moment was walking up to the Olympic course in Beijing (I made the 2007 junior team, so we got to go race on the Olympic course to test it out). I remember walking through the gates and seeing the perfect 2000m course stretching out into the hazy distance. I got goosebumps. I remember thinking, "this is cool".
3. Best race/practice, worst race/practice? Best race... Hard to say! Big Ten's 2012 was awesome, as was U23's in 2011 and NSR this year! Worst race by far was the NCAA Varsity Eight Petite Final in 2009... Or maybe that Head of the Charles when it snowed and I launched in only my uni.
4. Best/Anything you've done in the sport no one knows about? Hm... The summer of 2012 I went down to Miami to hang out with my best friend, intern at some museums and most importantly try to learn to scull with Francisco Viacava. I rowed on a floating dock for a week before I was even upgraded to a fat Peinert. When Frankie finally let me in a real single, I flipped immediately. I flipped probably a dozen right off of south beach that summer. Once a group of people gathered along the sidewalk and yelled to see if I needed help. If I had any rowing ego, that summer quickly put me in check.
5. Any/Most important advice for young rowers?
When I first started rowing, I didn't like it because it was so hard! I kept doing it because I seemed to be pretty good at it, but I dreaded practices and resented the fact that rowing required a certain level of rowing base fitness which required me to stay in touch with the sport all year. When I finally turned the corner, I grew passionate not just about the sport, but about the lessons it taught me and the person I've become through hard work and dedication. I would say to someone just starting out, stick with it. Through no other endeavor have I been able to reach the depths of personhood that rowing has offered me.
