1. What inspired you to go to your first rowing practice; was there anything memorable about it?
My older brother, Kyle, was the first person to encourage me to row. He was two years older than me and rowed at our high school, Roman Catholic High School. I played football in the fall and wanted to do another sport in the spring. Freshman rowing at Roman started in January so it was timed well with the end of football season. I was slow to pick up the sport, but once we stated racing in the spring I was hooked.
The most memorable experience is being on the water for the first realizing how tippy the boats were. Every freshman was on the water flipping over singles while the upperclassmen watched and enjoyed the moment. I couldn't even sit in the boat yet alone take a few strokes. I liked how rowing was a different sport and that it was challenging.
2. Was there a practice, race or other event when you fell in love with the sport, or when you knew you might not be too bad at rowing? When you thought you could make the national team?
I fell in love with the sport throughout my high school years. At Roman we had a great coach in Tom Henwood as well as a great group of guys who wanted to go fast and win races. This culture helped us succeed in our races, and as everyone knows it is fun to win races.
My confidence in the sport grew as a sophomore, when I was rowing in the Varsity Quad. We had a strong crew and we won the Youth National Championships and then raced in England at the Henley Royal Regatta.
These regattas were tons of fun! This is when I knew I wanted to keep racing, for as long possible.
3. Best race/practice, worst race/practice?
My best and favorite race was the Champ Men's 8 at the 2005 Head of the Charles with Princeton. That fall, I began rowing with the Varsity squad and for this race I was the only sophomore in the crew.
All the other guys in the boat were pretty well established, as they had got second at the IRA the year before. As the young guy in the boat, I really had no idea of the expectations but Curtis Jordan said to go out and make a statement. We started third behind Cambridge and the Dutch. All I remember is falling into a smooth long rhythm set up by our stroke man Sam Loch (bow seat of the AUS 8+ in London). Our coxswain James Egan was fired up for the race and what started as a five length lead for the Dutch was a four length lead by Riverside.
By the time we came through Weld it was down to three lengths. I was sitting in the two seat of the boat and was giving what felt like no effort at all as all 8 guys were perfectly in time at 36 strokes per min. As a crew, our race plan was to be the fastest in the last mile.
We were in the long bend from Newell to Cambridge and James was knocking the bouys off the port side of the hull, shaving seconds off our time, and our margin between the Dutch down to one length as we passed through the last bridge. We turned up the juice and hit the finish line at 42 stokes per min simultaneously putting our bow ball on the Dutch stern. After warm down we were derigging the boat as some of the guys mentioned we won. I said it was pretty cool to be the fastest collegiate crew at the Head of the Charles, then they corrected me in that we won the event straight up. That was a fun day.
The worst racing moment was in the spring of 2006 at the IRA. a really tough regatta, we went in as the number one seed and finished second to Cal. They simply outraced us that day and it was a tough pill to swallow. From that race I learned that everyone has tough races and I can only train harder and prepare better for the next one.
4. Best/Anything you've done in the sport no one knows about?
I think the coolest experience I've had in rowing is that I've been able to race with both my brothers. I raced with Kyle in 2002 during the scholastic year as well as throughout the summer and with my younger brother, Justin, in the summer of 2006. Both times we raced at the Canadian Henley and were able to squeeze out a victory.
Competing with a brother is pretty awesome and I was able to do so with both!
5. Any/Most important advice for young rowers?
Have fun rowing. The reason I started rowing and have been rowing for 11 years is that I enjoy rowing and racing. Enjoy everything about the sport!
