Canada won three medals in the first day of finals at the Pan American Games regatta in the Dominican Republic.
Stacey Norwood of St. John, N.B. and Marilyn Taylor of Calgary, Alta. won gold in the women's double in 7:25.09, with the U.S. closely behind in 7:25.95.
Gen Meredith of Ste. Anne-de-Bellevue, Que. won a silver in the lightweight women's single, and Fiona Milne of Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ont. won silver in the heavyweight women's single, although she typically rows as a lightweight.
"It was an excellent morning,” said Laryssa Biesenthal - Canadian team leader and a former Pan Am and Olympic medallist. “Gen had a great race, Fiona was nipping at the heavyweights the whole way down the course, and Stacey and Marilyn raced from behind and had an excellent last 1000 metres,"
