The 2015 U.S. Junior and Para-Rowing World Championships Trials are underway at Mercer Lake, with time trials in two events completed on Sunday evening.
The top-four crews in the men's double sculls and women's single sculls events advanced from the preliminary time trials to racing on Monday morning beginning at 9:10 a.m.
Narragansett Boat Club posted a strong first day of racing as the club was represented in the fastest finishes of each event.
After taking gold at the 2015 USRowing Youth National Championships in the women's double sculls with her older sister Emily, USRowing Sculling Selection Camp and Narragansett's Eliza Kallfelz (Jamestown, R.I.) posted the fastest time of the women's single sculls time trial with a time of 7:35.82, 15 seconds faster than the next fastest crew in the trial.
The young oarswoman continues to impress as Eliza has only been rowing since September.
"I had no idea what to expect; I just knew that I had to keep my stroke rate up," said Kallfelz. "I was a little worried that I had started too fast, but it ended up being okay. I never thought that I would be here. Rowing was just something I thought would be fun to do. When I started training more, and when my sister and I started having so much success this spring is when I really started thinking this was something I could be good at."
In the men's double sculls, the composite crew of Narragansett's Jack Luby (Barrington, R.I.) and Culver Academies' Joe Sterner (Chicago, Ill.) recorded the top time of the evening with 6:18.71.
The best two-out-of-three finals winners of the junior events this week will be nominated to the team that will compete in the 2015 World Junior Rowing Championships August 6-9, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
In the Para-rowing events, finals will be held on Tuesday morning starting at 7:00 a.m. in four boat classes including the arms and shoulders men's single sculls, arms and shoulders women's single sculls, trunk and arms mixed double sculls and legs, trunk and arms mixed double sculls.
Winners in the Para-rowing events will be nominated to the team that will compete at the 2015 World Rowing Championships August 29-Sept. 6, in Aiguebelette, France.
Monday's finals will begin at 7:00 a.m. and will be live-streamed on USRowing's YouTube Channel.
