A total of 932 rowers representing 53 nations have entered the 2002 FISA World Rowing Championships which take place from September 15 to 22 in Seville, Spain. 328 boats will take to the waters of the Guadalquivir river in the heart of the Andalusian capital to compete in the 24 boat classes that make up the Championships.
The high quality line-up includes 49 Sydney Olympic medallists as well as 48 2001 World Rowing Champions. The entries also include all fourteen 2001 World Cup champions entered in their respective boat classes looking to confirm their successful seasons by earning the title of world champion. Racing starts on Sunday September 15 at 9:30 hrs (CET) with additional preliminary rounds Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday mornings. Semi-finals will be held on September 19 and 20 and the finals will take place Saturday and Sunday August 21 and 22 from 11:30 to 14:15 hrs.
The Spanish television station TVE will serve as host broadcaster for the Championships, following the races with 16 cameras and providing an international signal of all semi-finals and finals. The pan-European television station, Eurosport, will air racing during semi-finals and finals as will other television stations such as BBC in Great Britain, ZDF in Germany, RAI in Italy, TVS in Slovenia, TV2 in Denmark, and FR2/3 in France.
The Championships week starts with the 110th FISA Ordinary Congress on Saturday September 14. Approximately 150 delegates from 60 member federations are expected to attend. The topics for voting include the site selection for the 2006 World Rowing Championships.
